Nyikos Cup a new tradition for RMAC rivals Mesa State and Mines

GOLDEN, Colo., Oct. 18, 2010 – The Mesa State College Alumni Association and Colorado School of Mines Alumni Association announced a new award, the Nyikos Cup, today at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference fall conference meeting, held on the Mines campus.

The trophy, honoring Dr. Michael Nyikos, will go to the winner each year of the football contest between Mesa State and Mines. Nyikos was a former vice president of Institutional Advancement for Mesa State and served as president of the Mines Board of Trustees until his death in February last year.

In a joint statement Mines President Bill Scoggins and Mesa State President Tim Foster said, “The Nyikos Cup is significant because it is inspired by the devotion of Dr. Nyikos to higher education, his contagious enthusiasm, spirit of fun, and sportsman-like conduct in every area of his life. This – much more than winning or losing – is behind this very special tribute to a very special man.”

Mines won the Saturday, Oct. 16, match with Mesa State 46-10 and will take home the Nyikos Cup this year.
