Mines celebrates "DeltaDays" diversity celebration
GOLDEN, Colo., Jan. 14, 2011 – Beginning today, Colorado School of Mines will host the largest celebration of diversity in the institution’s 137-year history.
DeltaDays 2011 will begin with a kickoff event Jan. 14 hosted in partnership with PeaceJam, featuring Denver-based MC Rudy Balles and DJ Cavem and the Moetavation crew. On Saturday, PeaceJam leaders will engage Mines students in the beginning stages of a restoration project in Denver’s Westwood community.
On Jan. 17, Rev. Cynthia James of Mile Hi Church will present a keynote address at the Martin Luther King Faculty and Staff Breakfast, entitled “Engineering a Life: Dr. Martin Luther King as an Engineer.” Activities will conclude Monday with an evening celebration featuring Denver’s SlamNuba, an internationally-acclaimed slam poetry group.
Eight presentation sessions will be offered as a part of DeltaDays 2011, including the topics of gender equality, GLBT rights, diversity in scientific research, medicine, and eco-activism.
On Jan. 21, Lieutenant Governor Joe Garcia will join the Mines community in a discussion entitled, “Who’s Black, Who’s White, and Who Decides?”
