Mines hosts Sustainability and Green Chemistry Summer School

GOLDEN, Colo., July 2, 2008 – Colorado School of Mines will host the American Chemical Society’s 2008 Summer School on Sustainability and Green Chemistry for graduate and post-doctoral students from July 9 to 16 on the School’s campus in Golden, Colo.

The program is designed to increase the awareness, understanding and implementation of green chemistry by advanced students. It aims to help fill gaps in the education of graduate students in the sciences who have little or no formal training in sustainability or green chemistry and demonstrates the environmental and human health impacts of their research.

“Colorado is well-recognized in the scientific community for its work on sustainability and alternative fuels, making Golden an ideal site for the meeting. This is only the second time the session has been held in the U.S. and Mines is honored to host such a prestigious event,” said Kent Voorhees, Mines professor and member of the American Chemical Society board of directors.

The session includes six days of lectures covering topics such as “Toxicology and Designing Safer Chemicals,” “Green Chemistry in the Pharmaceutical Industry” and “New Sources of Fuel from Algae.”

Speakers include Paul Anastas and John Warner, who are considered to be founders of the field by members of the green chemistry and engineering communities.
