Mines hosts robotics competition scrimmage

GOLDEN, Colo., Feb. 4, 2008 – Colorado School of Mines, in conjunction with the Colorado Foundation for the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics community, will host the second annual pre-ship robotics scrimmage in Volk Gymnasium, on the Mines campus, Feb. 16 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The FIRST Robotics Competition is designed to help high school-aged students discover and become interested in engineering and scientific research. The competition challenges teams of youth and their mentors to solve a common problem in a six-week timeframe using a standard "kit of parts" and a common set of rules. Teams build robots from the parts and enter them in competition.

Feb. 19 marks the end of the six weeks. The Feb. 16 scrimmage at Mines will allow area teams to practice before the 2008 FIRST Colorado Regional competition March 27-29 at the University of Denver. The 2008 Championship will take place April 17-19 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

Once the scrimmage starts, trained officials will inspect the robots and judge the competition. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s bomb diffusion department is scheduled make an appearance and robot demonstration.

Mines students and faculty, especially those from the Mines Robotics Club, will be on hand to help with electrical, mechanical and programming problems the teams might face. The event is hosted by Mines students who are receiving Engineering Practices Introductory Course Sequence (EPICS) credit. The program was implemented in 2007 by the Robotics Club to secure a steady flow of mentors and resources to the FIRST community.

Doors for the scrimmage will open at 7 a.m. to give teams time to set up stations and get ready for the competition. Matches will run until 3 p.m. with a break for lunch at noon.
