MicroPhage product wins 2010 R&D 100 Award

LONGMONT, Colo., July 27, 2010 – R&D Magazine has named the MicroPhage MRSA/MSSA Blood Culture Test a winner in the 48th Annual R&D 100 Awards, which salute the 100 most technologically significant products introduced into the marketplace over the past year. The awards, determined by an independent judging panel and the editors of R&D Magazine, are widely regarded as the “Oscars of Innovation,” according to the magazine.

Developed by MicroPhage, Inc., Longmont, Colo., based on research at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, the blood culture test is designed to rapidly identify Staphylococcus aureus (“staph”) bacteria as well as determine methicillin resistance (MRSA) or susceptibility (MSSA) in suspected cases of bacteremia—bacteria in the blood—in as little as five hours. Today’s standard of care for determining these types of infections takes up to three days for test-results, which can delay effective treatment, resulting in increased antibiotic resistance, and patient mortality.

“This major award objectively recognizes that our technology represents a new era for the effective and cost-effective diagnosis of bacterial infections,” said MicroPhage VP of Research and Development, Drew Smith. “These infections are a difficult challenge, afflicting millions of patients every year, and costing billions of dollars in health care expenses. This award bears strong testimony that our technology is an innovative benchmark in bacterial identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing, and we are delighted to receive it.”

Since 1963, the R&D 100 Awards have identified revolutionary technologies newly introduced to the market. Many of these have become household names, helping shape everyday life for many Americans. These include the flashcube (1965), the automated teller machine (1973), the halogen lamp (1974), the fax machine (1975), the liquid crystal display (1980), the Kodak Photo CD (1991), the Nicoderm anti-smoking patch (1992), Taxol anticancer drug (1993), lab on a chip (1996), and HDTV (1998).
