Mines fellows selected for Red Rocks program
GOLDEN, Colo., Sept. 14, 2010 –Colorado School of Mines has selected four faculty members to serve on the Red Rocks Community College Institute for Sustainability in Education (RISE) Fellowship Program with fellows selected from core partners Jeffco Public Schools and Red Rocks. The Mines RISE Fellows are Tracy Gardner, Pat Kohl, Junko Munakata Marr and Masami Nakagawa.
A new initiative of the Colorado Partnership for a Sustainable Future, RISE will link sustainability, education and community through programs and opportunities that bring together educators, business/industry professionals, and emerging research from education innovation and neuroscience. RISE is funded through a grant from the Community First Foundation, made possible through the Leach Family Donor Advised Fund. A primary goal is to prepare college faculty and K-12 teachers to understand the critical importance of sustainability and see its relevance in shaping how they teach and pursue their work as educators.
In recognition of the critical role that science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) play in addressing the social, economic and environmental challenges of our time, fellows from the three institutions all work in one of the STEM disciplines. They will share ideas and explore best practices in this first academic year of the RISE program, which will be offered annually, providing an on-going asset to education in the community.
By partnering with private and public organizations to develop sustainability projects, fellows will deepen their understanding of challenges and opportunities in the jobs they are preparing students for and enhance student learning for sustainability. In addition, mini-grants will be available to fellows to engage students in entrepreneurial experiences that address one or more aspects of sustainability.
Red Rocks has announced Liz Cox will serve as director of the RISE program.
