Mines' Society of Women Engineers largest collegiate section in the nation

GOLDEN, Colo., March 3, 2011 – Colorado School of Mines’ collegiate section of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is now the largest section in the nation. As of March 3, the Mines section has 395 members. The second largest collegiate section at Purdue University has 378 members.
“One of our section goals, since achieving the status of second largest several years ago, has been to encourage women of Mines to join SWE because it is such a great support network for our women in engineering,” said section President Jilu Jacob, a junior studying civil engineering. “We have finally achieved that goal.”

Established in 1950, the Society of Women Engineers is the driving force that establishes engineering as a highly desirable career aspiration for women. SWE empowers women to succeed and advance in those aspirations and be recognized for their life-changing contributions and achievements as engineers and leaders.

“SWE has a corporate-like officer structure with a president, seven vice-presidents and directors. It provides leadership opportunities for the 27 members who are part of this officer structure. These leadership skills are what appeals to the industry,” said Jacob.

Jacob says the organization offers a valuable opportunity to women at Mines to jump-start their careers.

“SWE provides networking opportunities to help our members obtain internships and full time jobs. SWE also hosts various social events through which our members can connect with each other and relax,” said Jacob.

The Colorado School of Mines section will host the Society of Women Engineers Region i conference March 4 – 5, 2011. More information on the conference can be found here.
