Whether wolf of dog, housecat or bobcat, horse or hound, the watercolor paintings of Janet L. Wissmann are alive with personality and expression. Using a special technique of layering transparent pigments, Janet's watercolors give unsurpassed depth and clarity. Her extra attention to detail and unique, self-taught style have provided paintings of exceptional quality to both art and animal lovers.
Janet is a member of the prestigious Society of Animal Artists. In 1992-1993, Janet's watercolor of two Belgian draft horses in corn titled "Spirit and Style" was chosen to be part of the SAA show which toured the United States. In March 1992, Janet's watercolor painting of a gray wolf in autumn won first place in the Big Game Art category at Illinois Ducks Unlimited's Wildlife Art Expo; her painting of a Labrador Retriever won second place at the same show. Janet is particularly well-known for her comissioned dog portraits, which focus on the personality of each individual animal. Janet's limited-edition print portfolio includes Belgian draft horses, timberwolves, Labrador Retrievers, Irish Water Spaniels, and Bernese Mountain Dogs.
In Feb. 1991, the Fourth Annual Exhibition on Animals in Art sponsored by the School of Veterinary Medicine at Louisiana State University gave a top merit award to her original stone lithographic print, "Maine Coon." Her work has been shown at various juried competitions, including the 1989, 1991 and 1992 Art Show at the Dog Show in Wichita, KS, and the Dog Fanciers Club's Contemporary American Dog Artists Contests held in New York City in 1990 and 1991.
Wildlife conservation and environmental education have always been of major interest to Janet who has a bachelor's degree in zoology and ecology. Artwork donated to Ducks Unlimited's yearly wildlife art auction has brought in over $2,500 for the conservation of wetlands.
Janet grew up with a special affinity for animals, nature, and art. She supports many environmental organizations including: The Nature Conservancy, National Audubon Society, The Natural Areas Association, and the Center for Marine Conservation.
Janet is now a resident of the rolling hills of southwest Wisconsin, where gorgeous scenery, wild turkey, dairy farms, deer, and countless songbirds provide her with year-round inspiration for new works of art.
