A small group at the Colorado School of Mines meets for problem-solving sessions to prepare for the Annual William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition (the Putnam) during the Fall semester.
The Sixty-Ninth Annual Putnam (click for brochure) will be held on Saturday, December 6th, 2008, on the campus of the Colorado School of Mines. Please contact me by email (dlarue@mines.edu) or phone (303-273-3868), for information about participating. There is no charge.
".ps" is postscript, Adobe's page markup language used my many higher-end printers, and ".tex" is Donald Knuth's "TeX", a page markup language optimized to producing good looking mathematical typeset pages. ".pdf" is another Adobe file type, intended for screen viewing and smaller than postscript. On this page are links to previous exams and solutions in these formats. A freely available viewer/interpreter for postscript is ghostscript/ghostview, available at http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost. If any of you are considering specializing in highly mathematical fields (such as, well, Mathematics, but also, say, Physics), some familiarity with TeX may be a good idea -- many a thesis and paper for publication have been set in TeX (or one of the macro packages, such as LaTeX). TeX is freely available for a number of platforms, a good PC package is MiKTeX, available from any CTAN site such as http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/systems/win32/miktex/, or their home site at http://www.miktex.org/. Both of these are already installed on the PCs in the CTLM. As for pdf file, ghostview will view them, as well as Adobe's free Acrobat Reader from http://www.adobe.com/
