CLIMATE CHANGE: OCEAN BED CORE EVIDENCE

Marine microorganisms (forminifera) produce CaCO3 (calcium carbonate) in their shells from the oxygen in sea water. When they die the shells fall to the bottom of the ocean and accumulate in sedimentary strata. Thus, a record of O18/O16 ratios in cross sections of ocean bed cores provides a record of relative glacial accumulation.
