Structure J appears in the plaza to the left. Carved stones, so-called " conquest slabs", similar to those embedded in the walls of the structure are scattered on the ground to the right of the structure. The east wall of System M appears to the far right.
Measuring more than 100 m on a side with the main platform more than 15 m above the floor of the plaza, the South Platform is thought to have been constructed in a single building effort during the Monte Albán IIIa phase.
The visible, northwest corner of the South Platform originally contained Stella 5, Stella 6 and the Estella Lisa, in this order, running from left to right around the corner. The originals have now been removed and replaced by copies. Some are on display in the museum at the site. The green patch visible in the photograph is a provisional copy of Stella 5 scheduled to be replaced by one indistinguishable (to the casual observer) from the original.
The northeast corner of the platfrom, behind Structure J contained Stella 1, Stella 2 Stella 3 and Stella 4. Stella 7 was located in the southeast corner and Stella 8 in the southwest corner.
These stellae are believed to depict events relating to the interaction between Monte Albán and Teotihuacán during the Monte Albán IIIa phase. See Marcus '83, '80.
