VALLEY OF OAXACA: MONTE ALBAN II; SOCIAL INTEGRATION

There is evidence that the entire Valley still formed a single social unit with three levels of sub-units. While the role of Monte Albán, within the Valley may diminish in importance, there is evidence that the its influence and it’s central role may extend beyond the Valley of Oaxaca. It may be a minor league imperial city.

Ceramics from the Valley of Oaxaca appear, for the first time, in significant quantities in the Ejutla Valley immediately to the south. There is some evidence of a military presence in the Cuicatlán about 100 km to the northeast across difficult terrain.

Structure J at Monte Albán, provides additional evidence for successful (the unsuccessful were not recorded) military adventures outside the Valley in the form of conquest slabs interpreted as monuments to military conquests towns whose location can sometimes be identified.

Ceramic evidence and ceramic production analysis suggest that this may have been a relative affluent time, in the access to a greater variety and more costly pots appears to have been more widespread.
