LISS.383: PAPER ASSIGNMENT

This paper assignement applies ONLY to those students taking LISS.383 ONLY. If your are taking LISS.383, together with LISS.382 in the same semester , see the paper assignment for LISS.382.

You are assigned the task of writing a section for a textbook to be used in high school classes in "social studies". The section deals with human impact on the environment in the American Southwest since European contact with emphasis on cultural context.

Your text should be based on material presented in this course -- both required and recommended reading. Further research should not be necessary, though it is, of course, permitted.

Your text should cover what you take to be the essential factual information taking account of, where appropriate, differences of opinion among experts. Beyond this minimal requirement, you may emphasize what you think would be most interesting and/or useful to your audience.

You are allowed at most 7 pages and must produce at least 5 pages of text (pages are double spaced, produced on a text processor with about 12 characters per inch).

You must use at least one illustration, and may use at most three. Illustrations should be submitted on 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper with appropriate titles and accompanying text where appropriate. You may produce your own illustrations, or use those found in the literature. Those taken from the literature must have an attribution visible on them.

You must produce a bibliography of 4 to 6 items which supports your text and provides guidance for further reading. You need not provide citations in the text, but you should assure that everything in your text is supported by material in the bibliography. You may draw on your text book, the bibliography in it and the recommended reading.

You may (but need not) submit a first draft for criticism by the instructor during, or before the fourth week of the course.
