PhD Fellowships for research and education in Environmental Stewardship of Nuclear Resources
Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) Program
The
Environmental Science and Engineering Graduate Program and Chemistry and
Geochemistry Graduate Program at the Colorado School of Mines have received a
grant from the U.S. Department of Education that will support new graduate
fellowships for Ph.D. students. The GAANN Fellowships are for study in the area
Environmental Stewardship of Nuclear Resources. Both graduate programs also offer financial assistance in
the form of Graduate Research Assistantships and Teaching Assistantships. All
applicants will be considered for these as well as the GAANN Fellowships.
Program Features:
Fellowship Stipend: Successful candidates will receive a GAANN
Fellowship with a stipend of up to $30,000 per year*, full tuition and
student fees in their first year. They will also
receive full tuition and student fees. Subject
to satisfactory academic performance, students will be supported in subsequent
years by either GAANN funding, Graduate Assistantship, or Teaching
Assistantship.
*This amount may be adjusted so as not to exceed the fellow's
demonstrated level of financial need (as calculated for purposes of the Federal
student financial aid programs under Title IV, part F of the Higher Education
Act of 1965, as amended).
Curricular requirements: Students are required to meet all the
curricular requirements of the home graduate program plus the ESNR specific
courses which include technical electives in Environmental Radiochemical
Processes and Radioactive Materials Management and courses/workshops in
effective teaching, professional communication and social license/ethics.
Research Experience: Fellows will have opportunities to conduct
research in state-of-the-art research laboratories of the Environmental Sciences
and Engineering Division, Chemistry and Geochemistry Department, DOE National
Laboratories and research field sites.
Supervised Teaching Experience: Each fellow Fellow will
receive instruction in pedagogy and instructional techniques through the CSM
Center for Engineering Education and will assist in the teaching of two
undergraduate/graduate courses during one of the years of the fellowship.
Academic Standing: Fellows must maintain full-time status in the
Environmental Science and Engineering or Chemistry and Geochemistry Graduate
Programs and meet all home graduate program requirements in addition to the
supplemental features of the GAANN Fellowship. Fellows must be engaged in
full-time in an internship and/or research during the summer.
Eligibility: GAANN The Department of
Education requires that in selecting individuals to receive GAANN fellowships,
an academic department shall consider only individuals who:
1. Are
currently enrolled as graduate students or have been accepted at the grantee
institution;
2. Have an
excellent academic record;
3. Have
financial need as determined by
fafsa ( www.fafsa.ed.gov). [RS1];
4. Are
planning to pursue the highest possible degree available in their course of
study (in our case, a Ph.D.);
5. Are
planning a career in teaching or research;
6. Are not
ineligible to receive assistance under 34 CFR 75.60 (in default on a Federal
loan); and

We particularly encourage applications from students from
traditionally underrepresented groups.
Application Procedure:
To apply for a GAANN Fellowship, you must:
1. Submit an
application for graduate school at the Colorado School of Mines. Specify the
Environmental Science and Engineering or Chemistry and Geochemistry graduate
program. You can obtain an application at http://www.mines.edu/admiss/grad.
2.a. In your
personal statement, please state that you are applying for a GAANN Fellowship,
describe your specific area of interest in Environmental Stewardship of Nuclear
