Graduate Opportunities

Our projects require motivated geoscience students who will live and work in the field for extended periods of time. I particularly welcome students who already have experience in the minerals industry. With the current level of interest in the minerals industry it is commonly possible to tailor company-sponsored projects to fit the students' needs. Most of my graduate students obtain support directly from mining or mineral exploration companies. This support may or may not include tuition and fees. Contact me to find out more.

We have an ongoing project with the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs to conduct applied research on Indian lands for assessing mineral potential (metallic and industrial mineral resources). Funding has decreased in the past year but it may still be possible to fund one M.S. level student on a BIA-funded project. In the past these projects have ranged from the porphyry potential of land in the Globe, AZ area to the phosphate resources of the Wind River Reservation, to platinum potential on tribal lands in Montana. These projects typically cover in-state tuition and fees and have a stipend associated with work at the BIA offices. Please contact Dr. Murray Hitzman for information.

Students may apply for admission in the fall or spring semesters. New research opportunities frequently arise and may not be posted yet on this page. I am also interested in research projects that students may bring to CSM. For additional information or queries about research projects, please contact me (mhitzman@mines.edu).
