The Hydrologic Science and Engineering (HSE) Program at the Colorado School of Mines is an interdisciplinary graduate program designed to provide students with a solid background in quantitative hydrology and allow them to explore specialties within related fields, with particular emphasis on areas of expertise of the participating faculty. We offer programs of study in fundamental hydrologic science and applied hydrology with engineering applications.

Our program encompasses:
  • groundwater hydrogeology
  • surface water hydrology
  • vadose zone hydrology
  • watershed hydrology
  • contaminant transport and fate
  • contaminant remediation
  • hydrogeophysics
  • water policy and law

How the HSE Program works:
The HSE Program currently offers M.S. (thesis and non-thesis option) and Ph.D. degrees in Hydrology. Students are required to take courses from a "core list", and a number of electives, depending on the degree pursued (more details here). Students apply to the HSE program, but are assigned to a particular home department, depending on preference and background. Students are generallyplaced in the same department as their advisor, but the advisor can reside in any one of the participating departments.

If you are interested in our hydrology program, we'd like to learn more about you. Please complete our online form and we will provide you with additional information on our program. In addition, you may contact the HSE Program Director, Dr. John McCray, or one of the participating faculty members.
