On Campus Connections
Most licensed online databases, indexes and electronic journals can be accessed from any computer on campus, whether it be in a lab, the Library, your dorm room, or an office.  Some online resources are only available in the Library.  For assistance using these resources, please contact Library Reference
Off Campus Connections (CSM students, faculty and staff only)

If you want to connect to our licensed online resources from off campus, you have three options:

  • CSM Client-Based VPN (Virtual Private Network)  The Client-based VPN software creates an secure encrypted connection between your computer and the CSM campus, and also allows your computer to be a member of the network that you are connecting to (CSM in this case), allowing you to access anything you would be able to do if you were physically at a machine on the campus, including the Library's indexing, abstracting, and full-text journal and information databases. The CSM Computing Center provides detailed instructions and assistance for accessing the VPN.
  • CSM Web-Based VPN (Virtual Private Network)  The Web-Based VPN is accessed via your Internet browser.  Like the Client-Based VPN software described above you must authenticate using your AC&N email logon and password.  Once successfully authenticated you can then access most of the Library's database and e-journal resources.  To access the browser-based VPN go to https://vpn.mines.edu.  For more more assistance see the Web-Based VPN page.

A subset of the Library's e-journal resources are incompatible with the Web-Based VPN.  We are investigating this problem.  In the meantime if necessary you can access these titles via the Client-Based VPN.
  • CSM Campus Modem Pool  This option is particularly useful if you do not already have an Internet Service Provider.  The CSM Computing Center provides detailed instructions and assistance for accessing the Modem Pool.

Basic requirements for using the VPN or the Modem Pool
  • You must be a currently enrolled student, or CSM faculty or staff.
  • You must have an AC&N (Academic Computing& Networking)  email account.
  • Follow the instructions provided by the Computing Center according to your operating system.
  • Open a ticket at helpdesk.mines.edu if you have problems with either the VPN or the CSM Modem Pool.
  • Some of the Library's online resources require Adobe Acrobat Reader
