HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Library subscribes to hundreds of indexing, abstracting and full-text journal databases.
  • Which database you use depends on your topic area and your desired results.
Types of Databases

The Library subscribes to hundreds of indexing, abstracting, and full-text journal and information databases.

Journal, magazine and newspaper databases are of two basic types:

  • Indexes to articles with citations and abstracts
  • Full-text databases that include the entire text of the articles or documents indexed

Some databases are hybrids with the full-text of articles for some journals, but only citations, or citations and abstracts, in others.

Identifying Which Database to Use

To help identify which database best suits your needs, try Databases by Subject, or the online Subject Guides.

Another source of assistance is Gold Rush, a tool created by the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries that can help you search for information on a specific subject area.

By using Gold Rush Linker in Gold Rush, or from a citation-only database such as ArticleFirst, you can access online full-text articles if available.

If you need help using a database, consult the Database User Guides or talk to a Reference Librarian.

Use the Internet Reference Shelf to find encyclopedias, dictionaries, and other online reference materials.

If you are interested accessing a specific online journal, use Gold Rush.

Database Availability
Most databases are available on any campus computer (including labs, offices and dorms), or from off-campus using the CSM Virtual Private Network or Dial-up Modem Pool. A few are only available in the Library.
