HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Basic Search Screen allows you to quickly search for items in the catalog using keywords, titles or author names.
  • Field Codes can be used when using the Keyword (Boolean) search on the Basic Search Screen.  They allow for highly specific searches.
Keyword (Boolean) field codes:

Field codes can be used to restrict your search to a particular part ("field") of the bibliographic record, such as title, author or subject. Using the Basic Search screen, highlight search type Keyword (Boolean), key the four-letter code, followed by your search term.  Use Boolean operators to combine search terms (see example below).

To Search For: Use Code:
Keyword Anywhere: Catalyst will search for your terms in every available field.  GKEY
Title: Catalyst will search for your terms in the title field. TKEY
Author Name: Catalyst will search for your terms in the author field. Includes individual authors as well as organizations as authors. NKEY
Journal Title: Catalyst will search for your terms in the journal title field. JKEY
Subject: Catalyst will search for your terms in all subject fields.  SKEY
Series: A series includes a number of separate works issued in succession, usually in a numbered sequence, under a single title for the series. All items in a series carry the series title, but also may have individual titles as well. Series may be issued at irregular intervals.  SERI
ISSN: Catalyst will search for your terms in the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) field. Every serial (newspapers, magazines, series) has a unique ISSN number which is used to identify such material. This can be extremely useful, for instance, when trying to locate material that has a fairly common name (for example, Science -- issn "0036-8075" or issn "0036 8075"). ISSN
ISBN: Almost every monograph item in our collection is given a unique International Standard Book Number (ISBN) upon publication. This feature is an excellent method for locating specific works or specific editions of a given work. To search for a book by its ISBN number, type the ISBN code followed by the ISBN number (omitting all hyphens). For example, ISBN=0787607630. ISBN
