U.S. Depository Library
The Government Publications Collection

The Arthur Lakes Library is a selective depository for U.S. Government publications and receives about 30% of the total items distributed by the federal government. The publications are received in many formats including paper, microfiche, maps, and electronic products and are found on the first level of the Library. In addition to collecting publications covering a wide range of subjects, the Library has extensive collections of publications from certain federal agencies including:

  • U.S. Geological Survey
  • U.S. Bureau of Mines
  • Minerals Management Service
  • Bureau of Land Management
  • Department of Energy
  • National Aeronautics and Space Administration
  • Environmental Protection Agency
  • National Institute of Standards and Technology
The Arthur Lakes Library is also a depository for Colorado state publications. Most of the publications are housed in the Government Publications Reference Room, although some are found in the general collection.

The U.S. and Colorado state publications in the Arthur Lakes Library use a classification system different than the LC and alpha systems used in other parts of the Library. The U.S. government publications are arranged according to the Superintendent of Documents (SuDoc) system and the Colorado state publications are arranged by the Colorado State Publications Classification system.

The Library provides free public access to the entire collection, including the government publications collection. This collection is available all of the hours the Library is open. Except for the reference items and microfiche, all U.S. Government and Colorado state publications may be checked out in accordance with Library policies.

Government Publications reference assistance is available from the Government Publications Reference Desk, the Government Publications Office (both located on the first floor of the Library), by email at or by phone. Reference assistance is available to all.
