Government Technical Reports - Information on Internet Resources and Collections Held at CSM
NTIS
  • NTIS Main Website - Provides access to NTIS reports from 1964 to the present (use Advanced Search for locating reports). Includes abstracts from reports from 1997 to the present, low-cost downloading of selected reports (typically 1997- ).  For expanded search capabilities, please see NTIS Bibliographic Database.
  • NTIS Bibliographic Database - Searchable database via Cambridge Scientific Abstracts for NTIS bibliographic information from 1964. Availability is limited to the Colorado School of Mines campus computer network only.

The Library does not have a strong NTIS collection except for technical reports from DOE and NASA. The small collection of other NTIS reports are predominately in microfiche and are filed by the NTIS accession number. These NTIS are not found in Catalyst.

The University of Colorado at Boulder has one of the best NTIS report collections in the country. Their NTIS reports are also filed by NTIS accession number and also not found in their online catalog.

Virtual Technical Reports Center
Virtual Technical Reports Center - Mega site containing e-prints, preprints and technical reports from the University of Maryland.
OTA
  • Office of Technology Assessment (OTA) Legacy - The complete, full-text collection of OTA reports (1974-1995) and additional materials. "OTA provided Congressional members and committees with objective and authoritative analysis of the complex scientific and technical issues of the late 20th century."

Check the Catalyst online catalog for OTA publications or browse under Y 3.T 22/2:2 in the paper collection. The Library also has a CD-ROM collection of all of the OTA reports from 1974-1995.

Science.gov
  • Science.gov - Science.gov is a gateway to over 50 million pages of authoritative selected science information provided by U.S. government agencies, including research and development results One can explore selected science web sites by topic or search the entire site. The advanced search allows one to search all or selected topics.
DOD
  • Scientific and Technical Information Network (STINET) - Access to Public STINET. "Public STINET gives you access to all unclassified, unlimited citations to documents added into DTIC from late December 1974 to present. There are also full-text versions of all unclassified, unlimited documents recently added into DTIC technical reports collection from September 1998 to Present."

The Library does not have a vast collection of DOD technical reports. Check the Catalyst online catalog for DOD publications 1976 to the present. For older publications, browse collection under D.

DOE
  • DOE Information Bridge - Full-text DOE research and development reports from 1995.
  • Energy Citation Database - Citations for energy-related technical reports (1948- ) from the Department of Energy (DOE) and its predecessors, the Energy Research & Development Administration (ERDA) and the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC).
  • Science Accelerator - Offers a single search that "allows [one] to search via a single query accross important collections of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) scientific and technical information.  Such collections present the results of research and development (R&D) projects and programs, descriptions of R&D projects under way or recently completed, and major R&D accomplishments."

Many technical reports for DOE and its predecessors can be found in the Library. For the most part, these reports are not found in the Catalyst online catalog.

  • The largest group of DOE technical reports is found in the microfiche collection filed by the NTIS accession number (beginning with DE). The dates range from the early 1980s to 1996.
  • DOE technical reports can also be found in paper and microfiche under E 1.28:(report number).
  • Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) (1975-1977) technical reports are found in paper and microfiche under ER 1.11:(report number).
  • Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) (1946-1974) technical reports can be found in paper and microfiche under Y 3.At 7:22/(report number).
DOT
  • National Transportation Safety Board - Publications - Includes reports on transportation accidents (aviation, highway, marine, pipeline & hazardous material, and railroad), special investigations and safety accidents, and safety recommendations.
  • TRIS Online - An independent agency providing information about aviation, highway, marine, pipeline & hazardous material, and railroad transportation.

The Library's small to medium size DOT technical reports collection is predominately in microfiche, although there is a small collection in paper, under TD. Most of the newer technical reports (1980- ) can be found in the Catalyst online catalog.

EPA

Unfortunately the Library does not have a strong EPA technical report collection. The majority of the reports are found under EP and are in the Catalyst online catalog.

NASA
  • NASA Scientific and Technical Information - Useful site that aids in finding "NASA aerospace STI, as well as locate domestic and international STI pertinent to NASA's missions and Strategic Enterprises." 
  • NASA Technical Report Server - Searchable database of technical reports from several NASA and non-NASA research centers and laboratories. For more information about inclusion of centers see About NTRS. Includes CASI Technical Report Server containing bibliographic citations for " Scientific and Technical Aerospace Reports (STAR file series), journal articles, and conference proceedings (Open Literature file series), and publications from the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) collection."   NACA was the predecessor agency to NASA.
The Library has a strong NASA and NACA collections.
  • The majority of newer NASA technical reports collection is in microfiche (older reports are generally paper reports and are found in the Government Publications stacks). The two largest series are:
    • NAS 1.15:nos. (Technical Memorandums)
    • NAS 1.26:nos. (Contractor Reports)
    Other technical report series in the collection are:

    The Library does NOT use the NTIS accession number for NASA reports (beginning with N). Many of these are found in Catalyst online catalog
  • The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) (1915-1958) technical reports are not found in Catalyst online catalog, but the Library's collection contains the following series:
    • Reports (Y 3.N 21/5:5/nos.)
    • Technical Notes (Y 3.N 21/5:6/nos.)
    • Technical Memorandums (Y 3.N 21/5:8/nos.)
    • Research Memorandum (Y 3.N 21/5:15/nos.)
 
 
USBM
  • NewNTIS Bureau of Mines Publications - Provides access to Bureau of Mines reports from 1990 - 1995.
  • NTIS Bibliographic Database - Searchable database via Cambridge Scientific Abstracts for NTIS bibliographic information from 1964. Not all Buearu of Mines reports are available on this site. Availability is limited to the Colorado School of Mines campus computer network only.
  • GeoRef - The most comprehensive geosciences database (1785- to the present) provided by the American Geological Institute. Not all U.S. Bureau of Mines reports available from this database. Availability is limited to the Colorado School of Mines campus computer network only.
The Library has a comprehensive U.S. Bureau of Mines collection. The Catalyst online catalog will have these reports from 1976 forward. None of the sites listed above will lead you the entire USBM collection. Usually the print USBM indexes (I 28.5:yrs. in the CSM collection) need to be used to identify older reports.
USGS
  • GeoRef - The most comprehensive geosciences database (1785- ) provided by the American Geological Institute. Availability is limited to the Colorado School of Mines campus computer network only.
  • Water Resources Abstracts - Access to water-related scientific and technical literature including government sources (primarily USGS) from 1967. Availability is limited to the Colorado School of Mines campus computer network only.
  • USGS Websites
    • Publication Warehouse - "The reports and thematic maps database currently contains more than 61,000 bibliographic citations, including numbered series begun as early as 1882.  Citations and online documents are added regularly.  Availability of content ranges from full text to bibliographic citation only."
    • USGS Science Online Information - Listing of online USGS information by subject. Some, but not all, overlaps other USGS sites listed above.
The Library has a comprehensive U.S. Geological collection. The Catalyst online catalog will have these reports from 1976 forward. GeoRef will not have the call numbers used in the CSM Library.
NUREG
  • Electronic Reading Room - "The Web site contains contextual information and the documents that are most pertinent to NRC regulatory activities. Many of the documents are in Basic References or Document Collections (see bulleted list). The rest are available either from our record retrieval system, ADAMS, or from our Public Document Room. Documents posted at the Web site are also retrievable from ADAMS."
The Library has a strong collection of NUREG reports. The majority of reports are in microfiche in the Y 3.N88: call numbers. Extensive series in the collection include:

  • Y 3.N 88:25/nos. (NUREG/CR [contractor reports] series)
  • Y 3.N 88:27/nos. (NUREG/CP [conference proceedings] series)
