Help: Using Computer Science literature

Are you looking for:

Try:

General subjects, definitions, concepts? Encyclopedias, textbooks, dictionaries, books
Numerical values, charts, formulas? Handbooks
Journal articles? Databases
Current developments? Journals, society newsletters and web pages, conference publications and web pages
General research tips:
  • Check with your librarian to find out about new resources and electronic databases. If you are not on campus, try the online Ask A Librarian form.
  • Look for library guides in related disciplines.
  • Know your library’s classification system. The CSM Library uses Library of Congress (LC). Use it to browse for information. In our Library, most computer science materials are located in QA76 and TK5105.
  • Become familiar with core works in your field. Use these as a base to start your search.
  • Keyword choices are important. Add keywords to your search from publications you've already identified and from thesauri and indexes.
  • Evaluate your sources--especially Internet sources. Check for updating, type and date of coverage, publisher and/or author.

Internet Resources

A huge amount of computer science information including tutorials, handbooks, and dictionaries is on the Internet. This is not surprising as these are the people who helped to invent it. In addition to these sources, web sites about a particular topic may be found using a search engine such as Google. by entering keywords that describe the topic.
