          Dissertation Abstracts PhD dissertations in various disciplines.
          Education Abstracts Covers education literature.
          ERIC Covers education literature from 1966-present; includes almost 1 million records. ERIC search tip: Use the phrase "higher education" to limit your search to college and university settings.
General and interdisciplinary:  
          Academic Search Premier Over 3,000 journals (scholarly and non-scholarly) on a wide variety of subjects; some full e-text; some information as far back as 1975.
          ArticleFirst Over 15,000 journals (scholarly and non-scholarly) on a wide range of subjects; provides information on journal availability; 1990-present.
          Expanded Academic Index Over 3,300 journals (scholarly and non-scholarly) on a wide range of subjects; over 2,000 journals in full e-text; 1980-present.
Science and engineering:  
          EI Compendex  (Engineering Index) Covers the engineering literature, including engineering education.
          Chemical Abstracts Available as SciFinder Scholar in the Library Reference Room; broad coverage of the chemical literature.

Chronicle of Higher Education statistics, including enrollment, faculty productivity.

Commission on Professionals in Science and Technology (CPST). Includes links to online publications on employment trends, salaries, and minorities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Engineering and Technology Degrees (annual). Engineering Workforce Commission, American Association of Engineering Societies, Inc. Includes national statistics, individual institutions by degree, population, and program. AAES also has publications on educational enrollments and salaries of engineers in education.

Engineering Education: Assessment Methodologies and Curricula Innovation, a collection of assessment information by the University of Pittsburgh.

National Center for Education Statistics (NCES)

National Science Foundation (NSF), Division of Science Resources Statistics. Includes statistics on budget, student and faculty demographics,  undergraduates, graduates and post-docs by institution and field.

  • Industry journals publish "trends" articles annually, for example Chemical & Engineering News, which has published several annual "Trends in Academic R&D Spending" articles.

  • Higher education journals publish articles on assessment and productivity. For example the Chronicle of Higher Education's: Fuyg, Piper. 2007. A new standard of measuring doctoral programs. Jan 13, A8-A13. Available online.

  • State agencies for higher education may have detailed statistics, particularly on student demographics and graduation rates, available via their websites.

  • University websites may include budget, enrollment, and faculty or student demographics.
