For APS Meeting attendees who register for the Open House, buses will depart from the Denver Convention Center starting at 4:30 PM.  For other Open House registrants, parking will be available.  Upon arrival at the Colorado School of Mines campus, guests will have the opportunity to visit several research facilities at CSM, including the Colorado Fuel Cell Center, a characterization laboratory for Colorado Energy Research Institute, and a femtosecond spectroscopy laser laboratory of particular interest to members of DAMOP.  Attendees may also visit the state-of-the-art Physics Learning Studio and discuss the activities of the Physics Education Research Group from the University of Colorado, which is the largest such entity in the nation.  Light refreshments will be served.

Following the laboratory visits, attendees are invited to a public lecture presented by Dr. Franklin M. (Lynn) Orr, Jr. , Director of the Global Climate and Energy Project at Stanford University.  Dr. Orr’s presentation will be entitled “Energy, CO2, and Global Change: Technology Research for a Greenhouse World.”  Refreshments will be served following Dr. Orr’s presentation.  For APS Meeting attendees, buses will be available between 6:00 and 9:00 PM to return attendees to the Convention Center.

The Colorado School of Mines

Founded in 1874, the Colorado School of Mines is a public research university devoted to engineering and applied science.  The current student body, enrolled in 14 different academic departments and divisions, is represented by a total of 3,600 students, including 710 graduate students.  Approximately 22% of the students are women, and are 250 international students from over 50 different countries.  CSM has the highest admissions standards of any university in Colorado and among the highest of any public university in the U.S. CSM is dedicated to educating students and professionals in the applied sciences, engineering, and other fields related to:

  • Discovery and recovery of Earth resources,
  • Conversion of resources to materials and energy,
  • Utilization of resources in advanced processes and products, and
  • Creation and maintenance of economic and social systems to ensure the prudent use of resources in a sustainable global society.

Research at CSM is concentrated primarily in the areas of energy, environment, materials, and minerals.  The institution hosts over 50 center and institutes addressing a wide range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary topics.
