Basic Mathematics for
Safety Professionals

This course provides a starting point in mathematics from counting in the base 10 system, comparisons with other number systems, and fundamental arithmetic. Addition is emphasized as the base for all subsequent operations with numbers. Subtraction as the inverse of addition is then detailed. Multiplication as a sequence of additions and division as a sequence of subtractions are then practiced, together with efficient methods and shortcuts. Parts of whole numbers as fractions are then used with the four arithmetic operations. Then the concept of decimals is introduced, noting the advantages of using decimals in our number system. Finally, percentages are detailed and used. The course ends with a very short preview of powers, basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.

The course will involve a great deal of practice with numbers. Because most individuals who have had difficulty with mathematics in the past have not understood the real basics, this aspect will be heavily emphasized, The objective of the course is to have the student feel comfortable in using numbers and be certain that they are correct.
