Research FacilitiesThe experimental and computer facilities in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and other departments on the CSM campus are available for the research programs of the Advanced Steel Processing and Products Research Center. Facilities of particular interest are listed here.METALLOGRAPHIC CHARACTERIZATIONZeiss/Jena Neophot metallograph, equipped with an image analyzer; JEOL 840 Analytical Scanning Electron Microscope; Phillips EM 400 Transmission Electron Microscope; and Phillips CM-200 Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope.TEMPERATURE CYCLING/HOT DEFORMATIONA Gleeble 1500 computerized mechanical test system with independent closed-loop temperature control for hot deformation studies, transformation diagram determinations, and thermal processing simulation; an MTS hot deformation system. TENSION AND COMPRESSION TESTINGInstron and MTS equipment equipped with specialized fixturing for evaluation the temperature dependence of tensile, compressive, and fracture properties of steels.FORMABILITY TESTINGSpecialized formability laboratory based on computer-integrated MTS systems includes fixtures for limiting dome height (LDH) measurements, plane strain tensile tests, biaxial stretch forming, and friction testing; systems are available for evaluations on coatecoated sheet steels. FORMING EQUIPMENTInsturmented hot and cold rolling mill for rolling flats and bars; instrumented wire drawing bench; stretch forming fixtures for sheet metals.FATIGUE AND TOUGHNESS TESTINGFatigue and fracture laboratory with mechanical test systems for the evaluation of bending, torsional, uniaxial tension, and tension-torsion fatigue; test systems for static and dynamic fracture toughness testing; and fixturing for testing specialized sample geometries with simulate root-bending fatigue in gears.
