OVERVIEW

Mission:

Promote and enhance environmental risk assessment research and educational activities at CSM. By bringing diverse interdisciplinary expertise to bear on problems in environmental risk assessment, the Center facilitates the development of significantly improved, scientifically-based approaches for estimating human and ecological risks for using the results of such assessments.

Background:

  • University-approved Center
  • Created in 1994
  • Risk assessment from a unique earth science and engineering perspective

Areas of Expertise:

  • Exposure assessment, dermal absorption
  • Hazard identification, fate and transport
  • Cost/benefit analysis, risk management
  • Statistics
  • Risk communication

Sponsoring Organizations:

  • EPA
  • NIEHS
  • NIOSH
  • DOE
  • DOD
  • NSF
  • DOI
  • DOA
  • USAF

Method of Technology Transfer:

  • Agency reports
  • Student theses
  • Presentations and professional meetings

Scope:

Research and education relating to any of the elements in the development or use of an environmental risk assessment including: hazard identification, fate and transport, assessment of human or ecosystem exposure, estimation of absorbed dose, assessment of human health or environmental impact from exposure, risk calculations, cost-benefit analysis, risk communication, and risk management.
