Guidelines

The following guidelines for sunset reviews are based on the Guidelines for Establishing a Research Center. Center activity is reviewed annually, and upon the recommendation of the subcommittee, a Center Director may be asked to submit additional information regarding Center activity over the past five (5) years.

Procedure

I.   ANNUAL REVIEW OF Center ACTIVITY

A. The Office of Research Development (ORD) will send to Center Directors a standardized annual report form in July of each year. The Center Director will complete the form and return the form to ORD within the time specified.

II. PRELIMINARY REVIEW OF ANNUAL REPORT

A. A SUBCOMMITTEE APPOINTED BY Research Council and chaired by the Dean of Research will review all Center Annual Reports.

B. Upon recommendation of the subcommittee, the Dean may ask a Center Director to submit a more-extensive report addressing Center activities over the past five (5) years to form the basis for a sunset review of that Center.

III. SUNSET REPORT

A. When requested by the Dean, a Center Director will submit a report including the following:

1. Current Mission Statement;

2.  Current description of long-term research, educational and administrative agendas;

3.  Documentation of sources, amounts and uses of funding;

                    4.  Summary of how overhead return was used;

5.  List of all faculty who have participated in the Center with the following information for each:

                            a. home department

                            b. role and extent of involvement

                            c. duties and responsibilities

                            d. compensation received from the Center;

6. List of all students who have participated in the Center with the following information for each:

a. their role and extent of involvement

b. duties and responsibilities

c. work commitment and compensation received from the Center.

                    7. Evidence of scholarship

    IV. SUNSET REPORT REVIEW

A. Based on the information provided in the report, the subcommittee and Dean of Researchwill review the report in the context of the Guidelines for Establishing a Research Center, and recommend Center termination or continuation, with or without conditions.

B. The Dean will submit the Center’s report and the subcommittee’s recommendation to Research Council for a vote on the dissolution or continuance of the Center.

C. The Dean will submit the subcommittee’s recommendation and the Research Council’s vote to the Vice President for Academic Affairs for a final decision on dissolution or continuation.
