| The Potential Gas Committee (PGC) has provided bienially updated estimates of the United States' potential supply of natural gas for the past 42 years and is the only regularly updated source of such estimates. The PGC's estimates are based on the latest available geologic and engineering information and the expert knowledge of its members. Taken together with concurrent estimates of proved reserves of natural gas developed by the United States Government, the PGC's gas resource estimates enable timely appraisal of the Nation's long-term gas supply posture.
The national PGC estimate of potential gas resources is the sum of 89 separate geologic province estimates of the gas volumes believed to be (a) present in known gas reservoirs but not yet booked as proved reserves (probable resources), (b) resident in undiscovered gas reservoirs located in presently gas-productive areas (possible resources), and (c) resident in undiscovered gas reservoirs located in geologically favorable areas that are not presently gas-productive (speculative resources) in the province. Each biennial PGC report offers a unique, remarkably comprehensive "snapshot" of the current supply status of the United States' -- indeed of the North American -- natural gas industry owing to its presentation of the latest resource base estimates, its inclusion of a wealth of detail underpinning those estimates, and its incorporation of thorough expert discussions of related topics important to the Nation's future natural gas supply.
