| Conflicting predictions of the Nation's long-term natural gas supply led in 1964 to establishment of the Potential Gas Committee. Petroleum pioneers such as Warren Beebe, Mark Burlingame, Richard Burgess, A.M. Derrick, David M. Evans, Ralph W. Garrett, P.N. Glover, George C. Grow, Robert Habbit, John Haun, Floyd Humphries, Harry Kent, George Lawrence, Dan Mayer, and Keith Murray were among the charter PGC members who pooled their expertise to produce a definitive estimate of the Nation's untapped natural gas resources.
Today, as in the past, the Potential Gas Committee consists of volunteer experts who are associated with a wide variety of natural gas industry, governmental, and academic institutions but share in common a keen interest in the Nation's future natural gas supply. The Committee currently has about 105 members. Most are active participants in Area Work Committees (AWC) corresponding to seven geographic areas of the country. They are geologists and engineers engaged in exploration for and development of natural gas within the area. Every effort is made to recruit the most knowledgeable experts because they are responsible for preparing resource estimates for each of the geologic provinces within their area. Natural gas recoverable from coal seams is evaluated through joint efforts of the AWCs and a Coalbed Methane Work Committee.
