EVALUATION CRITERIA

1. SIGNIFICANCE:

Does this project address an important problem related to the topical
research issues concerning the health and safety needs of the western mining industry?
If the aims of the application are achieved, will scientific knowledge be advanced?
Will there be a positive effect of these studies on the concepts or methods that drive
this field?

2. GOALS AND PRIORITIES:
Are goals clearly defined? Are goals achievable? Ability of goals
to significantly contribute to the improvement of Western mining health and safety concerns.

3. INNOVATION:
Does the project employ novel concepts, approaches or methods? Are the aims
original and innovative? Does the project challenge existing paradigms or develop new
methodologies or technologies?

4. ENVIRONMENT:
Does the scientific environment in which the work will be done contribute
to the probability of success? Do the proposed experiments take advantage of unique
features of the scientific environment or employ useful collaborative arrangements?
Is there documentation of cooperation from stakeholders in the project, where applicable?
Is there evidence of institutional support and availability of resources necessary to
perform the project?

5. APPROACH:
Are the conceptual framework, design (including composition of study population),
methods, and analyses adequately developed, well-integrated and appropriate to the aims of
the project? Does the project challenge existing paradigms or develop new methodologies or
technologies?

6. INVESTIGATOR:
Is the investigator appropriately trained and well suited to carryout
this work: Is the work proposed appropriate to the experience level of the principal
investigator and other researchers, if any?

7. VALUE OF THE PROJECT TO WMRC:
Ability to leverage health and safety awareness.
Ability to create research opportunities. Visibility of WMRC project activities.

8. INDUSTRY INVOLVEMENT & COLLOBORATION:
Degree of industry interest in the research.
Support provided by collaborating stakeholders or Western Universities.

9. BUDGET:
Is the budget appropriate?

GENERAL COMMENTS:
Please provide any written comments you may wish to make either on a specific
item or in general on the proposal regarding significance, importance, and
overall quality of the proposed research. Address, also, the adequacy of plans
to include both genders, minorities and their subgroups, and children as appropriate
for the scientific goals of the research and plans for the recruitment and retention
of subjects; the provisions for the protection of human and animal subjects, if
applicable; and the safety of the research environment.
