Conversation Starters and Discussion Topics for 1:1 Advising Meetings

Conversation Starters
A student has made an appointment with you or shows up during your office hours for academic advising. Here are some ways to begin the conversation...

2. What are two successes you've had this semester?
3. What would you like to accomplish next semester? Within the next year?
4. What do you want to do with your life?
5. Why did you choose to come to Colorado School of Mines?
6. Are there any special situations that I should know that could impact your educational plan? (i.e. job, family obligations, military obligations, documented disabilities, etc.)
7. What do you enjoy most about your classes this semester?
8. What is the most challenging aspect of Mines?
9. What strategies do you use to manage your course workload - and balance it with other activities and responsibilities?
10. Are you working on any group projects right now? How is that going? What are you learning in terms of working with others? What is working well? What is the most difficult thing about working in groups?
11. What programs on campus have you attended? What did you think about each program?
12. What activities/organizations are you involved with outside of the classroom. What are you learning from these experiences?
