The Colorado School of Mines Department of Public Safety is a full service, community oriented law enforcement agency, providing service to the campus 24/7. It is the mission of the department to provide an environment in which all people feel safe and secure, and to maintain a professional workforce that is responsive to the community and accountable for the most effective use of resources. The department is responsible for providing services such as:

  • Proactive patrol of the campus and its facilities;
  • Investigation and reporting of crimes and incidents;
  • Motor vehicle traffic and parking enforcement;
  • Crime and security awareness programs;
  • Alcohol / Drug abuse awareness / education;
  • Self defense classes;
  • Consultation with campus departments for safety and security matters;
  • Additional services to the campus community such as: vehicle unlocks and jumpstarts, community safe walks (escorts), authorized after-hours building and office access, motor vehicle registration, and assistance in any medical, fire, or other emergency situation.

The police officers employed by the Department of Public Safety are fully trained officers in accordance with the Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Board and the Colorado Revised Statutes.

The Department of Public Safety is located at 1812 Illinois Street, on the north-west corner of the intersection of 19 th Street and Illinois. The administrative office hours are Monday – Friday 8:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The office phone number is (303) 273-3333. After hours, an on-duty officer may be reached by contacting the City of Golden Police Department directly at (303) 384-8045. The department may also be reached by e-mail at psafety@mines.edu.

IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY DIAL 911

Colorado School of Mines is committed to making its campus a safe, and secure place to pursue an education. Many steps have been, and are continuing to be taken towards that objective.

Members of the CSM community should be aware that the possibility exists for a criminal act to occur. Members of the CSM community are encouraged to suggest crime prevention measures they believe will enhance campus safety to the CSM Department of Public Safety. The Department of Public Safety strives to work through problem prevention and education rather than responding to problems after they occur.

Emergency Telephones

Blue emergency telephones are located at specific outside locations on campus and red emergency phones are located throughout campus buildings. These emergency phones may be used to dial 911 in the event of an emergency, or to call Public Safety for assistance.

Crime Statistics

Crime and arrest statistics are available at the Department of Public Safety, as required by the Jeanne Clery Act.

Motor Vehicle Registration and Parking on Campus

The CSM vehicle operation and parking policy, adopted by the Board of Trustees, applies to all vehicles operated or parked on campus, including all student housing, public streets, and the fraternity / sorority lots within the campus boundaries.

All vehicles on campus must be registered with the CSM Department of Public Safety. The registration permit must be properly displayed and is valid indefinitely, while the operator is a member of the campus community. The fees for student permits are included in the Student Assistance Fee. Please stop by the Department of Public Safety for Temporary parking permits for your visitors.

All freshmen are required to park their vehicles only in those areas specifically designated for freshman parking. Student permits do not grant parking privileges in reserved parking lots or spaces. Reserved parking is available to full-time faculty and staff with reserved permits. Unauthorized vehicles are not permitted in service spaces, fire lanes, or other areas denoted by signs and / or red or yellow curbs.

Inoperative, dismantled, unlicensed and / or abandoned vehicles are not allowed to remain on campus and they will be towed at the owner’s expense. A vehicle is considered abandoned if it has not been moved for a period of 72 hours, is not properly licensed, or is not operable.

Violators of campus parking regulations are subject to ticketing and / or towing at the violator’s expense. Failure to pay campus-parking fines may result in an encumbrance on the offender’s account, resulting in denial of registration, grade reports, and / or transcripts. Excessive parking violations may result in the offending vehicles being booted, incurring additional expenses, or being impounded. Additionally, the parking privileges of the drive and / or owner of the vehicle may be suspended or revoked.

Due to limited parking space on campus all members of the CSM community are encouraged to use alternate means of transportation, such as walking, bicycling, public transportation, or carpooling, whenever possible. Motor homes and other recreational vehicles are not allowed to park on campus.

Single students living in campus housing, including fraternity and sorority houses, are allowed to have only one vehicle on campus at any given time. Married persons living in family housing are allowed a maximum of two vehicles on campus at any given time. Students who do not live on campus are not allowed to leave a vehicle on campus overnight unless they are away on a school sponsored function. Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis.

All state and municipal traffic and parking regulations are enforced on campus at all times. CSM has also adopted additional campus specific vehicle operation and parking regulations. For additional information, please refer to the CSM Vehicle Operation and Parking Policy available at the Department of Public Safety office and on-line at http://www.mines.edu/all_about/safety/police/parking/parking1-3.html and http://www.mines.edu/all_about/safety/police/parking/parking1.html .

Firearms, Explosives, and Other Weapons

Any type of gun, including BB and pellet guns, paintball guns, or any other device capable of launching a projectile, are not permitted on campus. Other weapons such as knives, picks, or axes are also not allowed. All weapons brought to campus must immediately be checked in at the Department of Public Safety for storage.

Explosives of any kind, including firecrackers or any other type of fireworks, and gunpowder, may not be used or stored on any property owned or operated by the school, unless it is for the explicit purpose of classroom or laboratory instruction and is under the direct supervision of a faculty member and with the consent of the Department of Public Safety.

Students are reminded that possession of a firearm or other deadly weapon on CSM property without permission is a violation of school policy, and in some cases, a violation of state law, and will be dealt with accordingly.

FIREARM STORAGE PROCEDURES:

  1. All firearms / weapons will be stored at the CSM Department of Public Safety Office in the armory and all access will be controlled by the department.
  2. Students that wish to access their firearms / weapons after hours must contact the Department of Public Safety during regular business hours and make advanced arrangements. The check in / checkout of firearms will be handled as soon as an officer becomes available.
  3. All guns must be stored in a protective case. All rifles and shotguns must be stored in a soft protective case. The hard plastic cases take up a large amount of storage space, which limits the number of weapons that may be stored. Students are limited to the storage of three items.
  4. All firearms must have the action cleared and the chamber and magazine empty prior to storage.
  5. All weapons will be logged in and out. The information obtained will include the owner’s name, and the make, model, and caliber of the weapons being stored. This information is obtained for identification purposes and not for any type of gun registration.
  6. At the time of drop off or pick up, the person must have a positive form of identification in their possession.
