Frequently Asked Questions...
Who can apply to be a Resident Assistant?
Anyone registered as a full time student at CSM for the 2008-09 school year who will be Sophomore level or above, including Graduate students, in the Fall of 2008. Applicants must be able to remain on campus during the entire academic year (Fall and Spring semesters). Applicants should be in good academic standing with a cumulative GPA of 2.3 or greater and maintain a semester GPA of at least 2.0.
How does the application process work?
All applicants must submit a completed application and two references by January 18, 2008. Selected applicants will progress on to Group Interviews, where your interpersonal and problem solving skills will be assessed. Finally, there is a personal interview with the Hall Director staff and the Director of Residence Life before Resident Assistants are selected.
Whom do I talk to if I have any questions?
Any current member of the Residence Life staff should be able to answer any questions you have.
Why should I apply to be a Resident Assistant?
Being a Resident Assistant teaches you many skills that will help you with your career, including communication, problem solving, and interpersonal skills. It also gives you the opportunity to remain connected with the campus community throughout your time at Mines.
What does the Resident Assistant job entail?
A student's first year in college can be challenging because it is their first time away from home. An RA builds a community on their floor to foster the growth and development of incoming freshmen and help them make a smooth transition into life at Mines. The main function of the RA job is to be a resource to the Residents in the Halls.
Where can I get an application?
Applications are available at the Student Life, Weaver, and Traditionals front desks, as well as on the Residence Hall web site.
Where should I turn in my application?
At the Student Life Office front desk in the Student Center, across from the BlasterCard Office.
How should I format my application?
It is recommended that you utilize the electronic copy of the application to format and type your responses in a professional manner.
What are some of the benefits of being a Resident Assistant?
All Resident Assistants receive compensation for a room in the Residence Halls and a meal plan, along with a stipend.
Can I hold another job on or off-campus if I am a Resident Assistant?
Due to the time commitments associated with the Resident Assistant job, it is not recommended that you hold another job on or off campus. However, this is negotiable with the Director of Residence Life once you are selected.
How will the Resident Assistant job affect my Financial Aid?
Financial Aid benefits are determined on a case-by-case basis, so the best way to have your questions answered is to talk directly to the Financial Aid Office.
If I have been documented for an incident, can I still be a Resident Assistant?
Students must be in good standing with the Dean of Students Office and the Residence Life Code of Conduct. Students who have been or are currently on probation status, or have been evicted from a residence hall, are not eligible to apply. Students who have had a minor residence hall infraction and have successfully completed all resulting sanctions may apply. Such an infraction may be considered in the selection process but will not necessarily disqualify a candidate.
Can I choose the building I want to be a Resident Assistant in?
When you apply, you are applying for the position not for a specific residence hall. Hall placement is determined by the Hall Directors and is based on the needs of the building, as well as the applicant's skill set.
I've never lived in a residence hall. Can I still apply?
Yes. We require that each applicant have completed at least one year as a full time student at Colorado School of Mines.
What if I don't have the required GPA?
At the time applications are due (January 18, 2008), Resident Assistant applicants must have a minimum 2.3 cumulative GPA, and 2.0 semester GPA. Students who do not meet these criteria will be cut from the process automatically. All Resident Assistants must be full-time students and progressing toward graduation.
What should I wear to the interviews?
Your interview is an opportunity to show your potential employer who you are as a candidate. Wear something that will allow you to be comfortable and give you confidence as you demonstrate your skills to the interviewers.
Should I go through the 2008-09 housing application process if I'm applying to be a Resident Assistant?
Each candidate should plan for fall housing without considering the Resident Assistant position in their plans. If you would like to live on campus next year, please go through the 2008-09 housing application process. If you would only live on campus if selected as a Resident Assistant, then you may not wish to go through the return application process. Resident Assistant selection will be completed by spring break, giving many candidates time to plan for fall housing accordingly.
