Spring 2004 Outreach: As an outreach project we have adopted an
elementary school. More specifically, every other week we meet with 5
talented young ladies in the 6th grade and perform science experiments
with them. Science is a subject that is not very popular, especially
early in your teenage years, however this is the time where you start
deciding what you want to do when you grow up. As peer mentors we hope
to keep science interesting and fun, as well as provide an opportunity
to learn subjects that might not be taught in the classroom. Chemistry,
biology, physics and life sciences are usually thought of as being for
older students, typically in high school, however younger kids have an
exceptional ability to learn and process information. If taught in the
right environment, no science is too advanced for elementary school
children. I will post all the lab procedures and explanations of the
science behind each experiment on this page as time goes by. Feel free
to use these as a teaching aid or as a project for younger kids.
