MEETING MINUTES |
|---|
March 24, 2008 EBWers! We will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, March 25, in CO 137 at 12noon. This week David Frossard and I will be showing some photos from my trip to Mongolia and China last summer. After the presentation we will talk a little bit about business. Of note will be preparations for Climate Action Days (4/16 - 4/25 tentatively). An important item to start with before the minutes from last week: The Mayor of Denver, John Hickenlooper, will be coming to CSM to talk about commitments to sustainability on April 7. The talk will be from 12-1 in Ballrooms A, B, and C in the Student Center. This should be an excellent opportunity to show student interest in sustainability and maybe do some networking with the Mayor. Students must RSVP by April 2 to Patricia at patricia.bohner@is.mines.edu. Sack lunches will be provided to all students who RSVP. Please arrive early if you can as seating will be limited. SO, on to business! Here's what happened last week: In attendance - Jason Fish, Ashley Fish, Andrea Yocom, Shay Robinson, Alex Gan, Taylor Embury, Ana Ruiz, Jon Meuser BIKE PROJECT Shay updated the group on his EPICS team and their progress with the Campus Bike Share program. Shay's team set up a table on two separate days before Spring Break, gathering survey data on whether or not the campus would like such a program. He estimated the total number of responses at ~300, a good sign for this long-term project. Shay also updated us on the Bike Program poster being designed by a group of graphic arts students taught by Shay's mom. EBW will use some of its budget funds to cover the cost of buying these posters. They will be in color and will display a general message advertising the bike program. These posters will be put up around campus when they are completed (mid-April). A meeting was scheduled to design a poster to hang with a bicycle in the student center as a display to generate awareness and interest about the Bike Share. Andrea, Shay, and I met on Friday, 3/21, in the CTLM and made this poster. Once Student Life approves the bicycle I have for them to hang, this poster and the bike will be on display in the SC until semester's end. RECYCLING/CLIMATE ACTION DAYS The remainder of the meeting was focused on Recycling and Climate Action Days. Jon Meuser talked to the club about what some tentative plans are for the event. At the moment, there are many ideas and EBW is committing its time to help the Student Council on Sustainability (Meuser) and Earthworks to make this year's Climate Action Days a success. We hope to bring speakers, show movies, host panels, conduct forums, and top it off with a on-campus party on Earth Day (4/22). EBW also hopes to organize a recycling awareness event for Climate Action Days. There will be more updates and a more exact schedule coming soon! Taylor spoke about what EBW can do to help EH&S as they take over the campus recycling program completely in the near future. EH&S needs a more efficient pick-up and delivery system for the recyclable waste. Student time is asked for, to volunteer to pick up bins, distribute bins, sort material at the EH&S buildings, and use engineering/design skills to create more efficient systems in all of these areas. If anyone cannot make it to the weekly meetings, but wants to get involved in these efforts, contact Taylor at tembury@mines.edu or myself at jfish@mines.edu. COMMUNITY SERVICE Andrea suggested a community service project with a fraternal life insurance group. Below is her description of the group and what we might do to get involved: Woodmen of the World/Assured Life Association are a fraternal life insurance company which, in addition to providing financial security for its members, takes an active role in its community through volunteer programs. Join Hands Day, which I take part in each year, is held the first Saturday of May each year to reach across generations to improve the community. However, Join Hands Day is just one program Denver Woodmen is involved in. They also hold an annual Christmas party for underprivileged children in the Denver area, complete with Santa and gifts. Adopt-a-Family, a program to deliver food and gifts to poverty level families, is also active during the holiday season. Woodmen employees involve their children and friends in these volunteer activities; I have been involved since I was 12 through my mother, their ex-underwriter and a member of their board. Denver Woodmen is interested in expanding their community involvement, and is especially keen to work with the Colorado School of Mines. To this end, they would like to build a relationship with EBW (since I have a foot in the water there), and are open to helping the club do some sort of "green" project in the future and/or to do a day with Habitat for Humanity sometime in the near future. This is an opportunity for EBW to become more active, and for anyone to have a fun day wielding a hammer or a paintbrush. It would be best to book a group for a Saturday in April, say, the 19th? If interested EBW members could email me at ayocom@mines.edu, I will gladly relay the message to Denver Woodmen's VP of fraternal affairs, Jerry Christensen. More information about WOW/ASA and their volunteer history can be found here. I hope to see many of you tomorrow for a visual trip through Mongolia and China! Jason Fish EBW Prez jfish@mines.edu |
