MEETING MINUTES

November 25, 2007

Attention EBWers,

We will have another table session advocating recycling on campus this Tuesday, November 27, from 11-12:30 in the Student Center. We're also planning on having a club meeting simultaneously while staffing the table, starting at 12, on the couches above the student center lobby. There we'll discuss what's coming up for EBW and what will be happening in the last couple weeks of the semester.

Last Tuesday we had a solid meeting before break. Thanks to all of those who were able to make it.

Professor Jon Leydens from the LAIS department gave a small presentation on a course he will be teaching again this coming spring, called Writing Proposals. In this class, students learn how and get to write a real proposal for money to fund a cause or project. These projects come from all over the state, nation, and world. The students get to pick which ones they want to write a proposal for. EBW is hoping to write a request for a proposal concerning the water project in Bane, Senegal. Students who have taken this class found it to be very useful and satisfying. The class is marked LAIS 402 and will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00 - 3:15 in Stratton Hall 105. If anyone is interested or knows someone who might be, please contact Jon at jleydens@mines.edu for more information.

We then discussed the recycling program on campus and all the events coming up and the work that is needed. Nearly 100 signatures have been collected so far from the petitions being passed around over the last week and a half. We are hoping to acquire 1000 signatures before the December 5 Sustainability Council meeting, so if you know anyone who wants to sign or you haven't yourself, please come sign soon. We are emphasizing that a better recycling program will not cost students more, but in fact save the school money, thereby relieving financial pressure.

Members of EBW are working on contacting Waste Management Co. to find out more information about what we can do to better our recycling system. WM is the vendor for Mines' waste system and may be willing to work out a single-stream recycling program, increasing the efficiency of the current setup. We are hoping to have a representative from Waste Management come to the Sustainability Council meeting and be part of the discussion.

Also, there is another course being offered this spring on engineering and sustainability, also in the LAIS department, number 498L. This course is taught by Juan Lucena and is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 - 10:45 am in Coolbaugh 210. For more information, please contact Professor Lucena at jlucena@mines.edu.

Check out the Oredigger next week! There will be more articles and info-graphics on the recycling issue here at Mines. The edition with these pieces comes out Monday, December 3. Pick up a copy and take a look. A big thanks to the authors for putting together some amazing articles!

The bicycle project is moving forward as well. The Golden Optimists are going to work with us in the spring, teaching basic bike maintenance skills and letting us use their storage shed up at Heritage Square where they repair bikes. Early on in the spring semester, we will be having a Saturday where anyone who wants to can come and learn how to fix bicycles and work on some too. We are setting the goal of getting fixed bicycles out to a community-in-need by the end of spring semester. Let me know if you're interested (jfish@mines.edu).

Any questions, comments, e-mail me at the above address.
