Snowshoeing: January 19

Don’t let the snow stop you from enjoying the outdoors. Come see the breath-taking views of the snow covered peaks. The cost includes snowshoe rental and transportation. All abilities welcome. The cost is $5. The registration deadline is Wed. 1/16 at noon. There is a mandatory pretrip meeting on Wed. 1/16 at 9pm at the ORC.

FREE Ski Tuning Workshop: January 21st

Are you tired of skiing or riding beat up gear? Stop by the ORC for this FREE workshop and let our staff teach you how to give your skis or board a high-quality hand tune and wax. We will teach you maintenance basics and show you how to use our workbench, so next time your gear needs some lovin’ you won’t have to pay someone to do it for you. This workshop will be held at 7 pm at the ORC.

Ski Tuning Special: January 21st - 25th

t’s go time! We are really excited about all the powder that has been falling as a result, we have decided to give everyone a great deal on ski and snowboard tuning and waxing. Bring in your gear and let us get you primed for the slopes. Bring your skis or board in between Mon. the 21st and Fri. the 25th and we will hand tune and wax them for ONLY $12. Don’t miss out on this super cheap deal! Equipment will be completed on a first come first serve basis. This special can’t be combined with any other specials.

National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) Presentation: 1/24

The Colorado School of Mines Outdoor Recreation Center is bringing NOLS to Golden. Join NOLS graduate, Sarah Lancaster, as she shares stunning pictures and cinematography for snowy Alaskan peaks to dense Patagonian rain forests, the majestic Himalayas to sparkling coastal Baja and the rugged Rockies to the remote Australian Outback. For 41 years, students with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) have learned and mastered outdoor skills, developed leadership and studied environmental ethics in some of the wildest classrooms in the world! Sarah will be hanging out in the Student Center on January 24th from 10 am until 2 pm so stop by and see what NOLS is all about. Later that evening Sarah will be giving a presentation in the Student Center at 7 pm in Ballroom C. Don’t miss this great presentation and a bit of schwag.

Learn to Tele Ski: January 26th

The ORC will be joining forces with the Mines Tele Club to provide you with an exceptional learning experience. Have you always wanted to give Telemark skiing a try? Telemark skiing is rapidly growing in popularity and is a great way to get into backcountry skiing. This is the perfect opportunity to take your winter sports skills to the next level. We will meet at the ORC the morning of the 26th and commute together in a van to Copper Mtn. where we will spend the day learning to free our heels. Some skiing experience is STRONGLY recommended for this class (contact Rob if you have questions about this 303-273-3907). The registration deadline is Wed. 1/23. There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting 1/23 at 9 pm. Cost: $10. Trip cost doesn’t include a lift ticket or ski rental however some discounts are available.

Rappelling Class: Sunday January 27th

Need a little excitement in your life? Have you always wanted to learn how to rappel? This class will be held at the climbing wall and will teach you how to rappel from our elevated platform. Sure to be loads of fun for climbers and non-climbers alike. Register at the ORC before Thursday 1/24 at 6:00 pm. This class will take place from 3 to 5 pm. Cost $5

Outward Bound Presentation: January 28th

Outward Bound is one of the nation’s leading, nonprofit adventure-education organizations. They offers an array of exhilarating course activities, ranging from 4 to 81 days in length, in many of the beautiful and pristine wilderness areas throughout the United States and internationally. Courses emphasize personal growth through hands-on experience and challenges. Students of all ages develop self-reliance, responsibility, teamwork, confidence and compassion, as well as environmental and community stewardship.  
Jon Underhill, Outward Bound’s Rocky Mountain Outreach Manager and Instructor, will be on hand to provide insight and field questions on the organization, the courses offered, scholarships, and life as an instructor.  Handouts and prizes will be provided.  The presentation will start at 7:00 pm in the Student Center in Ballroom E.

The cost for the trip is $5. Cost includes transportation, instruction, and most equipment. The registration deadline is 1/30 by noon. There is a mandatory pretrip meeting on Wed. 1/30 at 9pm at the ORC.

Lead Climbing Class: Sunday February 3rd

Test your nerves and hone your skills with our lead climbing class. In this class you will learn how to read routes, clip into protection, recognize a back-clip and z-clip, belay a lead climber and catch a lead fall. You must be top rope belay certified at the ORC climbing wall to take this class. This class is designed to teach you how to sport lead climb. If you are interested in traditional lead climbing (trad. climbing) please check out our Anchor Building Workshop. Register at the ORC before Thursday 1/31 at 6:00 pm. This class will take place from 3 to 5 pm. Cost $5

Avalanche Awareness: February 8th & 9th

Ever wondered what causes avalanches, and what you can do to be better prepared to deal with them. Come to our avalanche awareness course to get the basics on avalanches. This course involves one night in the classroom taught by the Colorado Avalanche Information Center and one day in the field working with beacons and practicing rescues. The classroom portion is open to anyone and is FREE. However spots are limited for the field portion, so sign up at the ORC today. Registration deadline: Wed. 2/6 at noon. You need to register whether you are planning on attending the field portion or just the classroom portion. Cost: $10 for the field portion and FREE for the classroom portion which will begin at 6 pm and will take place in the Student Center in Ballroom C.

Spring Break to Costa Rica: March 8th – 15th

The ORC is going international to bring you a super exciting and adventurous Spring Break Trip. We are partnering with the Costa Rica Rainforest Outward Bound School to bring you the trip of a lifetime. This adventure vacation will include: trekking in the jungle, tree climbing, rappelling in a waterfall, a day of whitewater rafting, surfing, snorkeling, sea kayaking, a day of shopping and sightseeing in San Jose and much more. Check out the trip’s website for a complete itinerary and an enrollment packet that should be able to answer all your questions.

The registration deadline is January 18th, but don’t delay; stop by the ORC to sign up today-space is limited. The cost for this trip is $700 for Mines students and does not include airfare. The cost for this trip is $750 for all participants who aren’t Mines students and does not include airfare (the trip costs more for non-mines students because the trip is being supplemented by student fees). The trip begins and ends at the San Jose International Airport. This means that you are responsible for finding the best way to get there…parents’ frequent flier miles etc. Hit up your parents, get a second job, sell your car, sell your second computer (you really don’t need two), or did I mention begging your parents, family, friends etc. Do whatever it takes to get the dinero for this once in a lifetime adventure.

Bike Tune-Up Special: Monday March 24th –March 28th

Bring your bike in for a tune-up and save some cash. We are offering full bike tunes for only $15 for one week only! Stop by whether you are riding a $100 Huffy or a $4,000 downhill bike. We’ll be sure to give your ride lots of love. See our website for a complete description of what our tune-up includes. If you aren’t sure if you need a tune or not check out our website; we also have a list of questions that should help you determine if your bike needs work. Bikes are completed on a first come first serve basis and we will only be accepting the first 40 bikes that come in so don’t wait until Fri. afternoon to stop by.

Thursday Trek, Chimney Gulch: March 27th

Is school starting to wear you down? Want to get outside and enjoy some fresh air. Join us for a nice quick jaunt up a Golden classic, Chimney Gulch. We will meet at the ORC at 4 P.M. and hit the trail quickly afterwards. This trip is free for all participants, so we hope to see you there. Registration deadline: Wed. 3/26 by noon.

Mountaineering Workshop: March 28th and 29th

Don’t miss one of our most exciting activities of the year. This trip is designed to teach students the basics of mountaineering. We will teach you how to use an ice axe, how to self arrest, walk with crampons and build snow anchors. This trip will get you prepped for a spring full of exciting peak ascents. Friday evening will be spent indoors reviewing some important information regarding winter travel and basic mountaineering. Saturday we will spend the day in the field practicing and learning more mountaineering techniques. Cost is $10.00 and includes transportation, most gear needed, and instruction. Registration deadline: Wed. 3/26 by noon; there is a mandatory pre-trip meeting 3/26 at 9 pm at the ORC.

Bouldering Competition: Saturday April 12th

Don’t miss our second Bouldering Competition! We will have categories for various ability levels including recreational, intermediate, and advanced. Competitors will also be divided into men’s and woman’s categories. The structure for the competition will be based on the American Boulder Series format. With lots of great prizes this event is guaranteed to be a good time. Registration deadline April 7th at 6 pm. Cost is $10, sign up at the ORC today.

FREE Basic Bike Maintenance Workshop: April 14th

This is the 1st in the series of Bike Maintenance Workshops we will offer this spring. This workshop will focus on the basics of bike maintenance. We will cover how to: change a tire, adjust your brakes, make minor derailleur adjustments and more. Feel free to bring your bike and ask specific questions regarding your ride. Our experienced mechanic will share his knowledge and tips to keep your bike in excellent condition. This workshop will begin at 7 pm and will be conducted at the ORC.

Anchor Building Class: Sunday April 20th

Are you ready to seek a challenge beyond sport climbing? Sign up today for our Anchor Building class. This class will teach students the basics of traditional (trad.) gear placement. Using the distinctive features and cracks at the climbing wall students will learn how to place cams. stoppers and hexentrics. Additionally, students will learn how to combine these pieces of protection to create a trad. anchor. Register at the ORC before Thursday 4/17 at 6:00 pm. This class will take place from 3 to 5 pm. Cost $5.

FREE Advanced Bike Maintenance Workshop: April 21st

This is the 2nd and final workshop in this series of Bike Maintenance Workshops we will offer this spring. This workshop will focus on techniques like bleeding disc brakes, derailleur adjustment and much more. Feel free to bring your bike and ask specific questions regarding your ride. Our experienced mechanic will share his knowledge and tips to keep your bike in excellent condition. This workshop will begin at 7 pm and will be conducted at the ORC.

Outdoor Rock Climbing: April 26th

Come with the ORC for a day of climbing and fun. We can teach you how to belay and introduce some climbing technique, or if you’re an experienced climber just come and enjoy some fun in the sun. Transportation, equipment, and instruction will be provided for only $5. All abilities are welcome. Registration deadline: Wednesday 4/23 by noon. There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting for all participants 4/23 at 9:00 PM at the ORC.

Whitewater Rafting: May 2nd

Feeling good about your finals? Spend half of dead day rafting the Class II and III rapids on Clear Creek. This trip is a great way to loosen up before finals. The registration deadline is April 25th at noon and there will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting Tuesday April 30th at 9 pm at the ORC. The trip will depart from the ORC around 9 am and return around 3 pm. Cost for this trip is $30.
