Stop by and checkout the new climbing wall. Our climbing wall is 36 feet tall and includes 20 top rope stations, 3 crack climbing routes and a cave. If you are into bouldering try some of our challenging problems especially the ones in the bouldering cave. If you’re more excited about outdoor climbing spend some time on our new outdoor boulder. We now have a nine and a half ft. tall freestanding boulder right outside the ORC. Bouldering is a great way to spend a lunch break or kill some time between classes.

Spring 2008 Schedule

Movement and Technique Climbing Class: Every Monday

This exciting new class will be held at the climbing wall and will help any climber who wants to learn proper techniques to maximize their performance. This class will focus on the basics of balance, body position and footwork. These techniques will advance your climbing level by enabling you to conserve your strength and climb more efficiently. The class will be held from 8 pm to 9 pm. Cost: $FREE

Ascending Fixed Lines: Class February 10th

This class is designed to teach students the basics of ascending fixed lines. This is a great skill to have when traveling in technical terrain. Typically these skills are used when trying to exit caves that you had to rappel into, or any other terrain that involves fixed protection and lots of exposure. You must be top rope belay certified at the ORC climbing wall to take this class. Register at the ORC before Thursday 2/7 at 6:00 pm. This class will take place from 3 to 5 pm. Cost $5

Lead Climbing Class: Sunday February 24th

Test your nerves and hone your skills with our lead climbing class. In this class you will learn how to read routes, clip into protection, recognize a back-clip and z-clip, belay a lead climber and catch a lead fall. You must be top rope belay certified at the ORC climbing wall to take this class. This class is designed to teach you how to sport lead climb. If you are interested in traditional lead climbing (trad. climbing) please check out our Anchor Building Workshop. Register at the ORC before Thursday 2/21 at 6:00 pm. This class will take place from 3 to 5 pm. Cost $5

Rappelling Class: Sunday March 2nd

Need a little excitement in your life? Have you always wanted to learn how to rappel? This class will be held at the climbing wall and will teach you how to rappel from our elevated platform. Sure to be loads of fun for climbers and non-climbers alike. You must be top rope belay certified at the ORC climbing wall to take this class. Register at the ORC before Thursday 2/28 by 6:00 pm. Class held from 3 pm to 5 pm. Cost $5

Bouldering Competition: Saturday April 12th

Don’t miss our second ever Bouldering Competition! We will have categories for various ability levels including recreational, intermediate and an advanced. Competitors will also be divided into men’s and woman’s categories. The structure for the competition will be based on the American Boulder Series format. With lots of great prizes this event is guaranteed to be a good time. Registration deadline November 9th at 6 pm. Cost is $10, sign up at the ORC today.

Anchor Building Class: Sunday April 20th

Tired of top-roping? Starting to seek a challenge beyond sport climbing? Well sign up today for our Anchor Building class. This class will unlock the secrets of trad climbing. Using the distinctive features and cracks at the climbing wall, you will be taught how to place a variety of trad gear. Register at the ORC before Thursday 4/17 at 6:00 pm. This class will take place from 3 to 5 pm. Cost $5

FAQ

What do I need to do in order to climb at the climbing wall?
You need to come in and sign a climbing wall waiver. In order to belay and climb at the wall, you must take and pass our belay test. You will need to demonstrate a mastery of the figure 8 follow through knot with a double fisherman’s finish, all proper climbing commands and the climber/belayer double check. You will be tested on and you must use the B.U.S. (brake, under, slide) belay method in our facility.

What if I have never climbed before?
We offer belay classes on Mondays and Wednesday’s at 6:00 pm. We take a maximum of 6 students per class so please stop by ahead of time to reserve your space.

Do I need to have my own climbing gear to use the wall?
No. You may either rent climbing gear from the Gear Up desk in the SRC or bring your own. GEAR UP rents harnesses, climbing shoes, chalk bags with chalk balls, and belay devices with locking carabiners.

What kind of climbing is available?
You may boulder and top rope climb. We will offer lead climbing in the future.

How old do I have to be in order to climb?
You must be at least 14 years of age and have your parent or legal guardian sign a waiver for you if you are under 18.

What’s up with the boulder outside the ORC?
We have an outdoor boulder on the west side of the building that is available for use. The ORC will rent crash pads for free for use at the outdoor boulder during our normal operating hours.
