Bike Tune-Up Checklist

General

  • Wash bike frames and wheels
  • Grease bearings, as needed
  • Oil cables and secure end caps
  • Check all nuts and bolts for proper tension
  • Grease seat post
  • Inspect frame for cracks, damage, and wear
  • Inspect all parts for wear and make recommendations for future repairs/replacement

    • Chain, Gears and Brakes

  • Degrease drivetrain
  • Remove slack from cables and reset barrel adjusters
  • Adjust and tighten brakes – pads and levers
  • Adjust gears – front/rear
  • Clean and oil chain and inspect for damage

    • Wheels

  • True wheels
  • Adjust hubs
  • Inspect and inflate tires/tubes

    • Fork, Headset and Bottom Bracket

  • Adjust bottom bracket and grease spindles
  • Align handlebars and stem
  • Lubricate all pivot points and seals on shocks
  • Adjust headset

    • Test ride!



    Not Sure You Need a Tune-Up?

  • Are wheels securely attached, properly adjusted,
    and freely spinning with all spokes in place?
  • Are reflectors clean and in place?
  • Are the seat and handlebars adjusted to a comfortable
    position with all nuts and bolts tightened?
  • Are hand grips secure?
  • Are caliper brake pads worn and are they properly adjusted?
  • Do gear and brake cables move freely?
  • Is the chain free of rust?
  • Are pedals securely fastened?
  • Are pedal reflectors clean and in place?

    • If you answered NO to any of these questions,
    then the bicycle needs to be serviced.

  • Do tires have cracks on the sidewalls,
    cuts in the tread, or excessive wear?
  • Do parts rattle or seem loose?
  • Do you have to squeeze the brake levers hard to stop?
  • Do the brakes squeal when stopping or slowing?
  • Does the bike shift on its own?
  • Do the wheels wobble from side to side?
  • Does the steering seem loose?

    • (squeeze the front brake and rock the bike front to back)
  • Do you have to inflate the tires often?
  • Does the chain appear rusty or does it click when pedaling?
  • Are the bike's cables frayed, rusty, or sticky?

    • If you answered YES to any of these questions,
    then the bicycle needs to be serviced.


    Ski & Snowboard Tuning Service

    Show your skis or snowboard that you love them by bringing them to the ORC to get them waxed and hand tuned. We have the best price in town. Only $16 for a hand tune and wax by our ski and snowboard technicians.

    Hand Tuning Overview

    Edge Tuning Details:
    • We use an RRS gummi stone to clean and remove any rust from your edges
    • We then use a file and a guide to sharpen your edges
    • Next, we use a coarse with a guide to your edges clean and sharp
    Base Tuning Details:
    • Using a true bar we determine if your base is flat. If your base isn’t flat we use a base flattener as well as other structure tools to flatten it.
    • P-Tex is used to fill any major gouges or deep cuts in your base
    • Using a universal Swix wax, we melt the wax onto the base of your skis or board with an iron.
    • Once cooled, we scrape the wax off your base with plastic scrapers.
    • Then we use two different types of brushes to remove any excess wax.
    • Finally, we use a Fibertex pad to give your base a perfect finish.

    Not all damages may be able to be fixed with a hand tune, but our highly trained staff can educate you on what you need done and where to go to get your skis or board fixed.

    Workbench Policies


    1. Leave the workbench, work area, and tools in the same place and condition they were found in.

    *If any of the above are dirty, broken, or not put away, you may incur additional charges for cleaning or replacement.



    2. Clean any mud and dirt off of your bicycle, skis, snowboard, or rollerblades outside.



    3. Wear closed-toe shoes while working in the Outdoor Recreation Center.



    4. Do not start into a project you cannot finish.

    *If you require help from an ORC employee, you may incur additional charges for labor.

    *We are here to answer any questions you may have, but you are the one responsible for finishing your project,
    unless you agree to the posted charges. Even if you are not finished working on your equipment,
    it must be removed from the work area.



    5. If a tool is broken, notify the ORC employee on duty immediately.

    *If appropriate, additional charges may be incurred.



    6. The work area is only for use during the Outdoor Recreation Center’s normal operating hours
    and an ORC employee is required to be present in the ORC at all times while you are working on your equipment.



    7. If you are injured while working in the Outdoor Recreation Center work area,
    no matter how minor it may seem, alert the ORC employee on duty.
