Who can use Student Development Services?
Any student currently enrolled in 7 semester hours or more may use Student Development Services. Faculty and staff are encouraged to use the services for consultation or referral as often as needed.
Why use Student Development Services?
Students visit Student Development Services for a variety of reasons:
Who are the professional staff?
The staff includes two licensed professional counselors and a licensed clinical psychologist.
Many times in life people must face difficult situations. Problems can seem confusing and overwhelming. Sometimes choices appear so limited that every possible outcome feels like more discomfort and unhappiness. An objective professional can often help you during these times. Student Development Services provides a quiet place where you can discuss your concerns in private with an experienced professional.
All communication is held in strict confidence. All identifying information, including the fact that you have visited Student Development Services, may be released to others only at your written request. Please read our Notice of Privacy Practices (pdf).
There is no charge to eligible students. Services are funded by the Student Services fee. In the case of referrals outside the university, most insurance plans, including CSMs, have mental health benefits.
You may make an appointment for personal, academic or career counseling by calling 303-273-3377, or in person in the Student Center, Suite 8.
You can usually be seen for your first session within a few days of the first contact. If you request a particular counselor, you may have a longer wait. In case of emergency, you can be seen with a minimum of delay.
What happens in the first session?
The counselor will obtain background information from you, assess your needs, determine the appropriateness of services at SDS, schedule further appointments with you, or make a referral to a private mental health provider off campus.
Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, during fall and spring semesters.
