Opportunities for Coops, Internships, and Jobs in Physics

The classroom education you receive as a physics student is an essential part of your degree.  There are, however, other important learning opportunities available to you during your undergraduate years.  Hands-on experience using your education in real world situations can be exciting, rewarding, and provide intellectual stimulation you will never find in lecture.  Potential employers as well as graduate school admissions committees pay close attention to employment and research experiences students have had as part of their undergraduate education.

The physics faculty at CSM encourages students to participate in an internship or Coop during the summer or academic year as part the student's education.  The purpose of this page is to suggest employment opportunities.  They have been organized by the type of instituion involved: Government labs, Industrial employers, University/REU opportunities and the CSM campus. Where web page links exist, they have been included.  Where written literature is available, interested students are referred to the files maintained in the Physics library.

Opportunities on the CSM campus

1. Summer Research opportunities within the physics program - Many professors in the department have research grants which include support for undergraduates. The best way to find these positions is to make appointments to talk with the professors, especially those doing research you find interesting. These projects often lead into continued research involvement during the academic year, senior design projects, and M.S. thesis and case study projects for five year students.

2. Outside of the physics program - Other professors on campus also support summer research experiences for undergraduate students. This may be especially interesting to students in five year programs where the final year is in one of the engineering disciplines. Again, the best way to find out what is out there is to ask.

University/REU Opportunities - These National Science Foundation sponsored summer research programs are very good opportunities for summer internships. The NSF link below gives a full list of funded programs. Some direct links are included as well.
  1. NSF REU page - listing of REU programs
  2. University of Oklahoma
  3. Cornell University Center for Materials Research
  4. University of Colorado/JILA
  5. University of Chicago - For minorities and women
  6. University of Oregon
  7. University of Wisconsin - Astrophysics
  8. McNair Scholars Program - This Colorado State program is run by Fort Collins
Government Laboratories
  1. Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships - DOE program
  2. Argonne National Laboratory - Student Internships
  3. National Renewable Energy Laboratory - Student Internships
  4. National Renewable Energy Laboratory - Permanent positions
  5. Sandia National Laboratories - Coops and Interns
  6. Los Alamos National Labs - Internships and Coops
Industrial Interns/Coops/Jobs
  1. IBM Research - Summer and Coop positions
  2. Micron - Jobs and Internships
  3. Motorola - Recruits both for coops/interns and permanent jobs
  4. Texas Instruments - TI provides Coops for quite a few mines students.  Best to talk to a faculty member or the carreer placement center to obtain a TI contact.
  5. INTEL
