Program Objectives

In addition to contributing toward achieving the educational objectives described in the CSM Graduate Profile and the ABET Accreditation Criteria, the educational objectives of the undergraduate program in economics and business are:

To provide students with a strong foundation in economic theory and analytical techniques, taking advantage of the mathematical and quantitative abilities of CSM undergraduate students
To prepare students for the workforce, especially in organizations in CSM’s areas of traditional strength (engineering, applied science, mathematics and computer science), and for graduate school, especially in economics, business and law

WHY STUDY ECONOMICS AT MINES?

As one could expect from an economics program housed in an engineering school, the B.S. in economics at Mines is truly unique. Most economics degrees at other universities are awarded as a Bachelor of Arts and are founded on a strong liberal arts or business aspect.

Our Bachelor of Science degree, however, is grounded in mathematics, engineering and the sciences. In our changing world, many private companies and public organizations need leaders and managers who understand not only economics and business, but also science and technology. We graduate technologically literate economists with quantitative economics and business skills that give them a competitive advantage in today’s economy.

How is economics at Mines different?

We highlight three main distinctive points in our undergraduate program:

A strong focus on energy and environmental economics
Mathematical rigor that builds on the Mines math and science core
A focus on developing practical tools for applying economics to real problems.

The Mines B.S. in Economics emphasizes these same key areas. Economics faculty also teach in our world-renowned graduate program in Mineral and Energy Economics, and we are able to leverage their expertise in our undergraduate classes. Within the economics degree, we offer an optional specialization in Energy and Environmental Economics for students who want an explicit focus on these important topics.

Due to the unique nature of our undergraduate economics curriculum, our graduates leave Mines with a competitive and technological advantage over other graduates in more traditional programs. Dr. Scott Houser

DR. SCOTT HOUSER

Dr. Scott Houser serves as the Department Head and as a Teaching Professor in Economics. Having received his PhD in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Houser joined the Economics and Business Department at Mines in 2007.

Dr. Houser brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our department. His research primarily focuses on tax policy, poverty and economic pedagogy.
