Experience Mines

We don’t do solo ascents at Mines. When you’re an Oredigger, you’re a part of a community—one that works, learns and climbs together. While we’re one of the world’s leading engineering and applied science universities, it’s our people that make us special.

I grew up in Katy, Texas, but I came to Mines because I wanted to step outside of my comfort zone. I figured that going to a school where I didn’t really know anyone would be a really good way to prepare for the real world. On top of that, having the chance to live in Golden was something I couldn’t really pass up. I love to do any and all things outside, and Colorado is the perfect place to live for that. Moving here was one of the best decisions I have ever made, and I really love Mines.

My favorite part about Mines is the part I didn’t expect, which is being able to combine things in STEM majors with art. When I came to college, I thought I would have trouble going to an engineering school, but I found I was able to incorporate some of my artistic passions into my work.

Being a first-generation student means a lot of responsibility, and it’s a challenge that makes me want to satisfy my parents and the people who brought me here. There, of course, is the goal of showing that I’m capable and ensuring that I will be successful in the end. Although it is a challenge right now, I know I can persevere.

What makes Mines so special to me is the community feel that you get when you come here. I knew coming here it was going to be a smaller college and that you’re much closer with your peers. But actually coming here and experiencing the support and the level of just people wanting to help each other, it really made it special to me and made me feel like I really belong here. People are just excited to learn and become the engineers they want to be.

I came to Mines without knowing anybody or what I was really doing. As a first-generation student, college seemed so daunting. It can be so easy to get discouraged and lose sight of the bigger picture. It is important that we remember why we’re here in the first place. For me, I always remind myself that I am doing this for la cultura and to inspire those kids who don’t think STEM, or even college, is an option for them. School is hard, but with the support of my family and peers, I know I can push through and succeed.
