Recent Phishing Attempt

We recently became aware of a new “phishing” attempt sent to campus.  The subject of this email is “Important notice from CCIT.” It will appear to have come from “CCIT, Colorado School of Mines”

As with other phishing attempts, emails like this usually purport to be from your system administrator, banker or another legitimate source warning you of a problem with an online account or other resource.  The email inevitably instructs you to log into a web page to verify your account, send your password via email, or communicate your private information in some other way.

This, and all other such email is a scam and should be ignored.

CCIT will never ask you to send your password or other sensitive information to us via email.  You should only provide this information via an encrypted, verified web site (many web browsers will indicate that a site has been verified by turning the web address green or yellow).

You can also always verify the authenticity of an email from CCIT using our page: http://ccit.mines.edu/verify.  We will post all legitimate broadcast email from us on this page, as well as examples of Phishing attacks we have received.  If you receive a suspicious looking email please check this page.  If you don’t find the email listed here please feel free to forward a copy to us for verification.
