Connecting to “eduroam”

The Mines eduroam wireless network gives you an encrypted wireless connection on campus, and access to the wireless networks of other participating institutions and organizations while traveling. It can be used in place of the standard Mines campus network CSMwireless.

But before you can connect a computer to eduroam you need to install your unique Mines.edu profile which can be downloaded from: https://cat.eduroam.org, it’s highly advised you install the profile before departing on a trip.

For Android smartphones, the eduroam CAT app must be installed first from the Play Store or https://cat.eduroam.org, afterwards, connect to the eduroam network and login in to the app.

To use eduroam, connect to the eduroam wireless network at a participating institution and enter your full Mines.edu qualified username, e.g. user@mines.edu, and your MultiPass password (also used for your Mines.edu email and Trailhead account).

Password changes and eduroam

Password caching in eduroam sometimes causes problems or lockouts when changing your MultiPass. Depending on the device this can be particularly tricky as some devices will fail to connect to eduroam and then try the next available network (CSMwireless). If the device is registered everything looks good to the user unless they happen to look at which network they are using. If you are experiencing this problem, please check the solutions below:

  • Start up your Keychain Access app, found in your Mac’s Applications > Utilities menu.
  • Search all entries for the term “eduroam” (without quotes).
  • Double-click on the eduroam entry to show attributes (alternatively, right-click on the eduroam entry and click Get Info).
  • Click Show password (authenticate as needed to proceed).
  • Change the password to your new MultiPass one.
  • Save these changes. You should now be able to connect to the eduroam network successfully.

 

Changing your eduroam password on an iOS device such as an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch requires a few extra steps. The procedure will vary depending on the version of iOS found on your device. You can find your iOS version by tapping Settings > General > Software Update on your phone or tablet. (In general, it’s a good idea to upgrade to the latest version of iOS whenever it is available.)

iOS 7 and later

  1. On your i-device tap Settings > General > Profiles.
  2. Tap eduroam > Remove Profile. You may have to type in your device passcode to proceed and remove that profile.
  3. Return to Settings > Wi-Fi and pick eduroam in the “Choose a network…” area.
  4. Enter your Mines username in the form username@mines.edu.
  5. Enter your Mines MultiPass password and tap Join.
  6. Tap Trust to accept the encryption certificate supplied by radius.mines.edu.

Your device should then connect to the eduroam network successfully.

iOS 6 and earlier

Before changing your MultiPass you can take these steps:

  • On your device tap Settings > Wi-Fi.
  • Tap the info icon (a blue “i” surrounded by a circle) next to eduroam.
  • Select Forget this Network.
  • Change your Mines MultiPass as instructed elsewhere.
  • Return to your device and tap Settings > Wi-Fi > eduroam to reconnect to that network.
  • Enter your Mines username in the form username@mines.edu.
  • Enter your new MultiPass in the password field and tap Join.
  • Tap Trust to accept the encryption certificate supplied by radius.mines.edu. You should now be connected successfully to the eduroam network.

If you forgot to take the above steps before changing your MultiPass, you will need to take the following steps:

  • On your i-device tap Settings > Wi-Fi.
  • Under “Choose a Network…” select Other….
  • Under Name type “eduroam” (without the quotes) and select Security option “WPA2 Enterprise.”
  • Choose < Other Network to return to the previous screen.
  • Enter your Mines username in the form username@mines.edu.
  • Enter your new MultiPass in the password field and join the network, keeping the default “mode” Automatic. You should now be connected successfully to the eduroam network.

 

The exact process for updating your eduroam profile after changing your Mines MultiPass depends on your Android version.

Ideally, after changing your MultiPass and selecting the eduroam network, your Android device should note that your old password is incorrect and ask you to insert your new MultiPass. Do so and reconnect to the eduroam network.

Alternatively, you can manually update your eduroam password by tapping Settings > Networks > Wi-Fi > eduroam and typing in the new password. (This process may vary by Android version.)
