Exchange Email Settings for Outlook

Outlook 2010 and 2013 in Native Exchange Mode

(Note: While a few of the small details – or the appearance of the programs – may differ, these instructions work with all recent version of Outlook. This is the recommended way to configure your email if your email client supports the protocol. Outlook and Mac Mail are among those that do. If you’re using an older version of Outlook, please ask for assistance at https://helpdesk.mines.edu)

  1. Open the Control Panel and click > Email Accounts > Add a new email-account > Next
  2. Choose “Microsoft Exchange Server” as your email account type.
  3. Microsoft Exchange Server is: array.mines.edu
    Check “Use Cached Exchange Mode”.
    – User Name = your username on Adit, which will appear underlined as your regular name once the server verifies it.
  4. Do NOT click “Check Name” at this time. You may click that link later, after the steps below are completed.
  5. Click “More Settings…”
    – If asked to authenticate, the User Name is in the form: adit\username and the Password is your Adit password.
    – In the GENERAL tab, raise the “Seconds Until Server Connection Timeout” setting to, say, 100.
    * In the SECURITY tab, the “Encryption” and “User identification” boxes are unchecked. Choose “Password Authentication” for logon.
    * In the CONNECTION tab, select:
    – “Connect using my Local Area Network (LAN)”
    – “Connect to my Exchange mailbox using HTTP”
    – Click “Exchange Proxy Settings”
    – “Use this URL to connect to my proxy server for Exchange: exchange.mines.edu
    – Select “Connect using SSL only” and “Only connect to proxy servers that have this principal name in their certificate”
    – Principal name for proxy server is: msstd:exchange.mines.edu
    Check, “On fast networks…”
    Check, “On slow networks…”
    – Proxy authentication settings: Basic Authentication
  6. Click Okay > Okay. If the “Check Name” link is still active, feel free to click it now. If your account is successfully set up, your Adit username will be replaced by your full name, underlined and the “Check Name” button will be grayed out.
  7. Click Next > Finish.

    * In the CONNECTION tab:
    –  Check  “Connect using my Local Area Network (LAN)”
    –  Uncheck Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP
  6. Click Okay > Okay. If the “Check Name” link is still active, feel free to click it now. If your account is successfully set up, your Adit username will be replaced by your full name, underlined and the “Check Name” button will be grayed out.
  7. Click Next > Finish.
