Equipment Purchase Recommendations
Purchasing equipment with Mines funds for business or academic use
Mines faculty and staff periodically purchase new laptops, PCs, printers, and other hardware as part of their jobs. But exactly what hardware should you buy?
To make that question easier to answer, CCIT put together these recommendations. We hope to make equipment purchases quick and painless. Our in-depth knowledge of this specific hardware should make any needed repairs simpler and faster as well.
See the links below for instructions on how to purchase particular items.
Recommended Computer Configurations for Faculty and Staff
Buying a new desktop or laptop for work? CCIT has optimized our configuration and support systems around the recommendations found here.
You can order any of the preconfigured recommended systems described below by ordering directly from Dell Premier. Scroll down a bit to My Tools and select Standard Configurations. Accessories can also be purchased directly from this site. If you do not see a standard configuration that works for you, then please submit a Mines Help Center request and let us work with you. We can then generate an eQuote that you will then be able to retrieve at the Dell Premier site and purchase directly.
Administrative Desktop – For typical administrative and desktop usage consisting in use of installed academic or administrative utilities, large scale spreadsheets, virtual machines, Matlab, Mathematica, Labview, etc. Is also suitable for light duty desktop computing consisting mostly of email, document preparation, Internet activity, etc.
High Performance Desktop – This is a scientific and engineering workstation for when high end CPU and RAM are required.
Laptop – A laptop computer that is verstaile and will meet the needs of most users
All quotes include 3 year ProSupport Plus with Next Business Day Onsite Service. Note that our standard configurations do not include Windows as we install an upgraded version of Windows once the conputer arrives.
Standard installations will include:
- Microsoft Windows 10 EDU
- Microsoft Office Professional
- Firefox and Chrome
- Adobe Reader, Java and selected other utilities
- Symantec Endpoint Protection
- Laptops will be encrypted using the built in Microsoft BitLocker
For Adobe premium products see https://mines.edu/ccit/adobe-premium-commercial-products. Do not purchase Adobe products from Dell.
Once your new computer arrives, please open a Mines Help Center request (http://helpdesk.mines.edu) and allow 3-5 working days for CCIT to configure and setup the new system. Other software will be installed on request, licensing permitting.
If you believe that these configurations are not a good fit for your needs, then please consult with us for recommendations. Alternatives may experience delays in configuration and support.
