Download Microsoft Software with the Microsoft Imagine Premium Program
If you are new to Mines, or new to this program, your Imagine account may not have been created yet. If you are eligible as explained below, please enter a Mines Help Center request at http://helpdesk.mines.edu, and we can add you manually. However, consider waiting a bit as you will be added automatically when the department rosters are generated after Census Day (approximately 10 days after the start of the semester).
The Microsoft Imagine Premium subscription (formerly known as DreamSpark Premium or MSDNAA) allows eligible students and faculty members to download selected Microsoft software that has been licensed by various Mines departments. This subscription is not free, but it’s free to students and faculty (participating departments pay an annual fee to make this available to their students and faculty). For students, eligibility to use these services is based on taking classes in the participating department(s) during the current semester. The effect is to allow qualified individuals to download many Microsoft titles at no direct cost to the individual.
Important Note: Many of the most popular Microsoft titles (including Project, Visio, Access, and Visual Studio) are included in this program; Microsoft Office programs (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) are not included in Microsoft Imagine. These must be licensed through other methods.
Who Is eligible?
As noted above, this service is licensed by individual departments. Therefore, not everyone within the Mines Community is eligible to use Microsoft Imagine Premium software. As of Fall Semester 2013, eligibility is limited to faculty and students enrolled in classes in the following departments:
- Applied Mathematics and Statistics
- Chemical and Biological Engineering
- Chemistry and Geochemistry
- Civil and Environmental Engineering
- Economics and Business
- Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
- Geology and Geological Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Metallurgical and Materials Engineering
- Mining Engineering
- Petroleum Engineering
How do I get an account?
Each semester, course rosters are pulled from the participating departments on the first day of classes. A second roster is pulled after Census Day to allow for the inevitable changes in schedules. These rosters are used to automatically create new accounts, update existing accounts, and deactivate accounts that are no longer eligible. When your account is created, you will receive an email from Colorado School of Mines – Microsoft Imagine @e-academy.com> with Subject: “An account has been created for you”. Follow the instructions in the email to register your account and create a password for it. You will be automatically signed in once registration is completed.

Some words of caution:
Installing application programs is usually pretty straightforward. Upgrading or installing a new Operating System, like Windows 10, may also involve changing hardware drivers, upgrading other applications to be compatible, or even finding that upgraded applications or drivers are not yet available. It’s your responsibility to be aware of these factors. If you’re not sure, get some advice from the maker of your computer/software or another authoritative source before leaping forward.
