Student Safety: Using Campus Spaces

Due to COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions, the Mines you know and love looks a little different this semester. Here’s what you need to know to get the most out of your time on campus:

Drop-in study spaces for commuter students

The Return to Mines Task Force has developed this list of locations around campus that are available on a first-come, first-served basis for any Mines student in need of a socially distanced study spot with a strong WiFi connection. Many of these spaces are classrooms that are not being used this coming semester due to their smaller size and limited capacity under the COVID-19 distancing requirements.

Students living on campus are asked to utilize their housing space for remote classes and inclement weather shelter to allow other spaces around campus to be used by commuter students.

Looking for a space you can reserve for a virtual meeting or thesis/dissertation defense? Please contact reservations@mines.edu or visit events.mines.edu. Drop-in spaces have also been designated for faculty and TA use.

Commuter students also have access to the various computer labs located across campus. For a full list of campus computer labs  — and the specific software available in each lab — check out the ITS website. Learn more about how to access lab computers remotely via Labby here.

Help stop the spread and keep these spaces safe for all by following these rules:

  • Wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth at all times.
  • Abide by the maximum room capacity.
  • Do NOT move any signs, chairs or furniture
  • Wipe down your work space before and after use with the provided cleaning supplies.
  • Keep talking to a minimum
  • Wear headphones if you are listening to audio
  • No food or drink allowed
  • Dispose of all trash before you go

Building by Building Access Schedule

Campus building access will be a little different than usual this semester to help keep our Oredigger community safe.

During normal university business hours (7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday), most campus buildings will be open and accessible by all—as they usually are—with a few notable exceptions, including Arthur Lakes Library, which will be open to Mines students and employees only this semester.

After 5:30 p.m. weeknights and on weekends, many academic buildings will stay open for Mines students and employees only—easily access these buildings by scanning your Blastercard. Other buildings will have Proctor Access Only, meaning you must have access granted specifically by the building’s proctor to enter (either via Blastercard or hard key) after normal business hours.

Hot tip: Make sure to always have your Blastercard with you—especially if you will be on campus after normal business hours.

Terms to know:

  • Open access: Doors will be unlocked and open to anyone on campus.
  • Blastercard access: Doors will be locked but  anyone within the Mines community can access the building access by scanning their Blastercard.
  • Proctor access only: Doors are locked and access is only available to those building users who have access granted specifically by the building’s proctor
